Are you frustrated with the lack of development/enhancement to the Finalescript plug-in in recent Finale releases?  I, for one, would really like to see FS become the great time-saving tool that it could be.  But development seems to be at a standstill.  If you feel as I do, please respond, post to the forum, write tech support or Customer Service or do whatever it takes to get some activity on this.  MM probably doesn't see a great call for it but if if enough of us request it, hopefully something will start happening.

I have been a heavy FS user but unable to solve thorny problems.  Most of my posts get viewed a lot but hardly ever answered.  In fact, volume on the forum itself has been declining to an alarming degree.  Let's show enough interest to keep FS from dying.

I would also love to see a better/more feature-rich Finalescript. I just don't understand why something that could save hours of time and was introduced as a major feature just 3 years ago has been so under developed ever since. Even simple things like a more readable Finalescript dictionay/help file have never been released. It's a shame.

Hope this will change with Finale 2008. There have been many threads with possible new features. MakeMusic: please use those threads.

I would suggest simply replacing the custom language with an actual scripting language embedded in Finale. Python would be my suggestion- I've embedded it in an app before and it's pretty easy to do. Then the developers at MM would only need to focus on exposing an API into the scripting language, instead of worrying about language features and implementation.

Then the language wouldn't need documenting (plenty of web docs), and the API could get all the documentation attention...

The problem here is that Finalescript is the product of one man, Robert P., who is also the guy behind Human Playback. No-one at MM has ever confirmed whether RP heads a team of programmers, or is working as a one-man-band, but impressions are that it is the latter. Robert, please feel free to say if it is otherwise.

Since all Robert's efforts currently seem to be directed towards HP, FS looks like being dead in the water.

Which, as I've said before, is a crying shame.

Brian

Dear All,

I did suggest on the Mac side at least, that Finalescript at least have the ability to run an Applescript, which would do a great deal to enable it as a robust workflow solution. A straw poll of my non techie colleagues reveals that as it stands Finalescript is just about within their grasp, something like python would be completely beyond their reach. Sibelius's scripting language is much less "layperson" friendly and as such is mainly used by plug inprogrammers rather than general users. It also has some serious drawbacks.
I would rather see improvement to the UI of Finalescript.

Regards

I agree 100%, Randy!

I'd say that FS is one of the great untapped resources available to Finale users.
In its current state it is useful, but just consider the untapped potential!!

Consider this one more vote for further development! I find it mildly useful in its current state. However, I am more often disappointed by its limitations.

Finalescript Users or Would-Be Users:

Make Music sent me a so-so response on the future of FS, copied below. The bottom line is that if others contact them asking for further development/documentation it could possibly make a difference in their product planning. Perhaps it's worth a shot. So I encourage you to contact MM on this.

I am afraid that MakeMusic, along with most other software companies, does not have the policy of announcing new features so far in advance. So I would have no way of knowing what the Development department at MakeMusic has planned for this plug-in. I have already submitted a request on your behalf to them, so there is not much else that I can do. If you have friends who also would like to see improvements to this plug-in, tell them to submit their requests as well.

Sincerely,

Ryan

Wow. That's not a very encouraging response. I wonder what they tell their investors?
