Hi all,
My University is setting up a new Creative Music Technology Degree course and I'm doing research into other establishments that do the same.
I'd be grateful for any educators/students out there to give me ideas on what is in courses offered elsewhere. I'm interested in Degree level institutions but also what goes on in feeder programs (High School, 'A' Levels, International Baccalaureate etc).
I'm trawling the web for exam papers, syllabus listings and course descriptions but would appreciate any comments from people directly.
So as not to clog up the forum, I'll be happy to take longer answers or attachments via email but I'm sure that your comments will be of interest to some of our readers in any case.
Thanks!
Pete

Peter,
After having founded the computer lab in
1996 at the Musik-Akademie in Basel
Switzerland, specifically to acquaint
students there with the basics of
computer technology, especially in the
educational field, the course work has
been pared down to a little Emagic Logic
and a little Finale 97 (I was forced to take
my Academic licences with me when I
was "replaced" by my new boss - he
decided he could teach the same course
material as part of his methods class, so
he just installed his personal licences
4-5 times and he's only got Fin97 and
never updates). They stopped all basic
intro computer courses, all Office-type
programs, have no scanners, no
graphics programs, etc. with the
reasoning, that anything along those
lines, the students can take care of
learning themselves. They also have no
Web connection for the students.
At the same school the composers have
their own fully stocked studio but only they
are allowed into it.
As of the end of June, I will no longer be
working there.
greetings
Leonard Cecil

I have good contacts at a couple of public universities, so I might be able to help you, but can you be a bit more specific about what you mean by 'Creative Music Technology'?
Seems like that phrase could cover everything from computer-generated composition to voicing grand pianos.

Thanks Anon. It is indeed a broad course but is aimed at practising musicians rather than the Tonmeister type course, normally aimed at would be recording engineers or technology product designers.
So, topics include (some will be optional): synthesis, science of music, composing with computers, electroacoustics, notation software(!), studio techniques, film music, the music industry, multimedia, production/post-production and so on.
The reason that we plan on calling it "Creative" is that there will be large compulsory modules on aesthetics, poetics, performance and music creation, rather than physics and mathematics.
Hope that helps...
