Good morning everyone!

I know we (MakeMusic) have been awfully quiet lately. We've been working on a number of things (such as the transition to Boulder; more on that a little later today), but we've also been working on a new maintenance update for Finale.

Today, we're releasing Finale 2014d - an update intended to address a few specific issues reported from our users. Here's an outline of what you can expect:

  • Optional large-size tool palettes: A larger size for improved visibility can be chosen in the Preferences - Palettes and Backgrounds dialogue box.
  • New selected tool color: The highlighted tool on any tool palette is now a light blue rather than dark gray. This is in response to feedback from customers regarding difficulty seeing which tool was selected.
  • Disable snapping for beat-attached Smart Shape: A new menu option (Smart Shape > Snap When Attaching to Beats) returns to the Finale 2012-style method of placing Smart Shapes. Smart Shapes still attach to beats, but now only the attachment lines snap. The start and stop points appear where you click.
  • Help Improve Finale. After installing this update, a new dialog appears on the first launch asking whether or not you want to submit anonymous usage data to MakeMusic. (More info below)
  • Contents of the previous measure no longer overwrite existing music when selecting the "Move the extra notes to the next measure" option in Speedy Entry.
  • File opening and saving speed has been further improved.
  • Quick Look support is now enabled for documents created in Finale 2014.
  • Spotlight support is now enabled for documents created in Finale 2014.
  • The Movie Window can now open all file types that were available in Finale 2012.
  • The misalignment of stem connections for upstem quarter notes in certain circumstances has been corrected.

A word about the "Help Improve Finale" feature: When you launch 2014d, you'll be asked to share anonymous Finale usage data with MakeMusic (tools used, time spent in each tool, overall time spent in Finale, that sort of thing). This data will be used to better inform the design of future versions of Finale.

This is an opt-in feature (you get to choose to participate or not). No personally-identifiable or document-specific information will ever be collected, and you can change your mind about sharing at any time by choosing Help > Help Improve Finale.

You can download your update to Finale 2014d by opening Finale 2014 and clicking Help > Check for Updates. I've been a long-time lurker on these forums so I'm excited to be here and answer your questions. Ask away!

Additionally, I'd like to take a moment to introduce Peter, who will be taking over my duties as Moderator of this forum as I will not be making the move to Colorado. Peter has been a great asset to our Customer Success team (I'm sure some of you have already encountered him in that capacity) and I have no doubt that he'll be a great resource to you going forward. He'll be here to answer your questions starting today, and I'll be updating the information in the stickies to give information about contacting him to report spam or anything else that needs a moderator.

I was all a-flutter when I read Erin's post because I had been holding on to 2011 just for QuickLook. But a new file created in 2014d doesn't seem to give me QL capability.

What are others seeing?

Bill

P.S. The QL Generator I have is from 2011. Should the 2014 update have installed a more recent one?

Hi Bill,

That's odd. It's possible that have the 2011 plugin could cause a wrinkle. I'm on it!

2014d will install a new one, but it's in a new location (it's now in the App rather than the Quicklook folder).

I just tried a new document in 2014d and QL worked right away for me. I'm trying some other tests here and I'll let you know!

Bill: How many (ballpark) .mus and .musx files do you have on your computer? If you have a bunch, it might just take the new plugin some time to index them. I just reinstalled 2011 to make sure I had the old version of the plugin and then created a new file in 2014d. QL worked right away, but I don't have all that many files on this machine.

You need to delete the OLD QuickLook plug-in (and Spotlight mdimporter) in /Library/QuickLook (and /Library/Spotlight).

The new plug-ins are inside the app bundle.

Ballpark -- I have about 10 .musx files and about 18 zillion .mus files.

I will give it some time and let you know what happens.

Wiggy,

If I delete the 2011 QL Generator, will the new one correctly render old files?

Hi Bill,

"18 zillion .mus files" are probably slowing down the new plugin a bit. :-) I don't think that deleting the old one will make it work any faster, although the new one will read .mus and .musx files.

Erin and others,

I removed the 2011 QL Generator and now both .musx and .mus files are previewing as expected.

I reckon this will make me a 2014 user.

No, but having two generators for the same file type may cause conflicts.

Erin, you haven't mentioned the pinch-and-zoom fix on Yosemite.

Okay, I've learned a bit more about this. Which version of the plugin the system uses can be a bit of a murky area, and it's certainly possible that the system would still be trying to use the old plugin (so yes, removing it could prevent conflicts).

And thank you for reminding me about the pinch-to-zoom issue! In Yosemite, we saw that this was quite slow in 2014, so this has been fixed. Additionally, an issue that prevented tool specific menus (Chord tool, Staff tool, Lyrics tool, etc.) from appearing on Yosemite has also been fixed.

Could be an installation problem. Tech Support should be able to help you out, although running the installer again will probably fix it.

I had moved the app to a folder on the same drive, but that hasn't affected the previous updates to 2014

That's not a good idea. Update installers frequently install revised components only (i.e. not the whole thing) to specific locations. You should really keep all apps in the /Applications folder, and not in any subfolders. (The same is true for Apple's own apps.)

If you're seeing a standard Apple application icon, then that suggests that Finale has got missing components. Run the full C installer and then run the D updater.

Option to disable the dreadful new smart shapes snap to beat thing. Great. I can now use 2014!

All I need now is text sizes in increments of less than 1 point and I'll be happy.

Bruno,

What OS are you using? I can't think of any reasons why 2014d would be slower that c, but I'll certainly look into it.

We're getting some reports of slower download times. I'll look into it and make sure nothings wrong, but I suspect our server might be a little overloaded right now. Give it some time or maybe consider trying again a little later.
