I am interested to know if any International Schools are using SmartMusic for their Band Programs? Have your experiences been positive?

Russell,

We have a few international schools using SmartMusic (I'm not sure how many, but in England, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, etc.) to great success. The repertoire included in SmartMusic is pretty much all from the American wind band publishing houses, but it's really useful and accessible to students in this age group. The method books are pretty widely-used as well.

We're still looking into the roadblocks to getting our Impact Gradebook service available outside of the US; it's not going to be a fast or simple adjustment, so you'll still want to have students do assignments via email, saving their recordings and sending file attachments.

Another big recommendation is that if you're getting your students involved, place one large order on their behalf; shipping expenses can get pretty large if they all place individual orders online!

Thanks for the swift reply.

I noted that you have an agent in Singapore. Can they supply us with the SmartMusic software? How long does the delivery time take to countries like Vietnam and Indonesia?

Unfortunately, SmartMusic isn't available for purchase through our International dealers - they are only able to sell our Finale notation software. Delivery time from our headquarters in Minnesota varies between 12-15 business days based on how much is ordered (by weight). There is a same or one-day turnaround from our Shipping folks, they're very efficient.

Dear James,

Thanks for your prompt replies.

Is there the opportunity to download a trial version? This might be a more persuasive tool when pitching SmartMusic to admin. International Schools could be a whole new market for the product!!

Russel,

You can grab the update at www.smartmusic.com/Support/Updates.aspx - after installing, you'll be prompted to activate SmartMusic 11. Without purchasing a subscription, you'd have to click "Close" in the lower-right corner first. Then in the File Menu, open Music Library. You'll see a folder in the upper-left called "Samples" and can open those files to use SmartMusic prior to purchase.

I have used it off and on at The American School of Dubai with mixed results.

The biggest downer is that Impact does not work for us.

I have used it in a group of 60 beginning band students. I required it in 06/07 and 07/08. With that number of kids, I was only able to get about 50% of them up and running, and using the program effectively.

So many kids could not get beyond the registration/authorization process for a variety of reasons, too numerous to mention.
Others had computer related problems where it simply would not work.

I gave up this year on requiring it, as the new requirement of Smart Music HAVING to be on the internet complicated things even more.

So this year, I have only used it in front of the group, which is great, but I am now only using about 10% of it's features.

I came online today and upgraded to 11, and see if anything was new. STILL NO IMPACT FOR OVERSEAS USERS!!!

I was considering requiring it next year as our school is going to a laptop program, but not sure it will be worth it if Impact is not available.

I really love Smart Music, and have been an advocate of it for years. There are just some complications that I wish were ironed out.
