I have a Roland JV1080 with the orchestral expansion card. The challenge is to get Finale to play back using this card and its patches. I figured out the Instrument List aspect-- bank, etc., but the 1080 plays back only one channel at a time! This isn't really what I'm after.

If anyone is using this or a similar external unit, I'd appreciate any assistance.

It's been a few years since I used hardware gear, but I think the 1080 should have a multi mode (does Roland call that a "performance"?) where you can assign different instruments to each of the 16 midi channels that it can receive.
If you can figure out how to set it up in that mode, then you can assign your desired instruments on the Roland to the desired channels (i.e. flute on channel 1, clarinet on channel 2, sax on channel 3, etc.). Once you have that set the way you like, then be sure to save it before moving to Finale for addressing.
In Finale, in the midi menu, you should be able to designate the output device for Finale channels 1-16...they should be routed out of the midi interface that you are using. (The midi interface "out" should be connected to the 1080's "in".)
Set up your score template so that the Finale channels correspond to the channel assignments you made on the Roland. *be sure that "send patches before playing" is not checked in the instrument window in Finale, otherwise Finale will send out those patch numbers and possibly change all the instrument assignments on the Roland!

I hope this helps in getting you started.

All the best...

Thanks, Brad. The 'performance' seems to stir something in the depths of my memory. I'll go thru the inscrutable Roland manual for further clues. "Send patches before play" is not checked.
