Here are some tasks that I'd like to accomplish with script that I can't figure out:

1.) Setting page margins (left at .875, right at .5 for right-sided pages & the opposite for left-sided pages)
2.) Making all staves on all systems able to be spaced individually
3.) Naming staves that currently have no name (e.g., "[Staff 3]" name "S" for soprano)
4.) Adding a group & bracket to 2-4 staves with the barlines going only on staves
5.) Removing the checkmark under "Independent Elements" for staves where Key Signature is checked (by mistake)
6.) Replacing one complete set of lyrics with another
7.) Saving a file from an earlier version of Finale by simply adding " - Finale 2005a" to the filename

I'd appreciate it if anyone on the forum would let me know if these tasks can be done in Finalescript & if so, what the code would look like.

Hi Randy,

Here are some response to your queries:

1. Yes, you can manipulate page margins with Finalescript.

Try this:

left page margin 0.875 inch
//left right page margin 0.875 inch
right right page margin 0.5 inch
left left page margin 0.5 inch
right left page margin 0.875 inch

That should work perfectly.

(The first line is actually a workaround, because the command left right page margin doesn't work sometimes as expected - looking into this...)

2. Not currently supported by FS

3. Yes, this is possible, you need to select the staff first:
select staff 1
staff name "S"

If you type 2 strings, you can specify the full and abbreviate names:
staff names "Soprano" "S"

4. Not supported.

5. Not supported.

6. With Search and Replace, but word by word... Ex:
search "xxx" replace "yyy" lyrics
Perhaps you could give a specific example...

7. Yes:
save and append "_Finale 2005a"

I have noted your the unsupported items for a future version of Finalescript.

Robert,

Once again, you've helped immensely!  I've tried everything that's supported except replacing lyrics & to give you the example you requested I'm attaching two files.  In our hymnal there are several instances where the music is the same but the words are different.  In those cases I think the most efficient way to get one of them arranged is by just replacing the lyrics.  Let me know what you think.

Randy

Hi Randy,

Yes, you're correct, search and replace "en masse" - not word by word - works perfectly:

search "1. O beau-ti-ful for spa-cious skies, For am-ber waves of grain, For pur-ple moun-tain maj-es-ties a-bove the fruit-ed plain. A-mer-i-ca! A-mer-i-ca! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with broth-er-hood from sea to shin-ing sea!" replace "1.The Lord un-to His Christ hath said; sit Thou at My right hand Un-til I make Thine en-e-mies sub-mit to Thy com-mand. A scep-ter pros-pered by the Lord Thy might-y hand shall wield; From Zi-on Thou shalt rule the world, and all Thy foes shall yield. " lyrics

I had not even realized that Finalescript was able to accomplish this!

I noticed that you used a weird fake time signature at the beginning. Is that for putting the "1. ", "2. " ... in the lyrics? If so, remember that you can type alternate space (#ascii 160) by holding Alt key why typing "0-1-6-0" on you num pad. On the Mac, the shorcut is Opt+Space bar. Finale doesn't interpret char. #160 as "move to next entry".

I removed the space between "1." and "Lord" when replacing: for some reason, the lyrics got shifted otherwise.

Robert,

That weird time signature came with the original file.  My church produced the vocal hymnal & the project manager sent me all the files on a CD.  I find a lot of odd things like that & I've also come to the conclusion that it is because the person who entered the material did not know about Alt+0160.
