I'm at home this week on parental leave, and the timing was such that two weeks ago was the end of term followed by a week of Spring Break.
I had created grading periods/terms on SmartMusic, and now SmartMusic has moved to the third trimester.
I had a student that e-mailed over break begging to be able to still complete her last assignments for SmartMusic on these first days of a new trimester (while I am not at school). I told her that would be okay, and then received a follow up e-mail from the student indicating that the assignments were no longer available.
SO...some questions...
1) Does SmartMusic "shut down" old assignments for students once a new term begins? I have SmartMusic set to accept late work, but perhaps the end of a term is non-negotiable? 2) When I go online on my home computer (which has SmartMusic but is not the computer I assigned assignments with), there seems to be no way to reassign an old assignment from the previous trimester. Is this because I'm using a different computer (choir person here, so I've had to make my own SmartMusic assessments that reside on the other computer) or because of the change of terms? 3) Is there a way to "upload" my self-created assessments to SmartMusic so that I can access them on any SmartMusic-enabled computer?
Right now, my gut instinct tells me that the end of a term closes all SmartMusic activity (other than changing grades in the Gradebook) from that term. If so, I see a real positive in creating an annual calendar in SmartMusic versus following our term schedule.
Let me know if this makes sense and if you have any suggestions.
Thanks,

1) I have assignments due at different dates. We do 9 weeks grading periods so here's my set-up: My 1st 9 weeks assignments are set with an end date of June 19th 2012. I tell my students that they are due on a different date (say October 6th). It leaves the assignment visible until completed and I keep a second gradebook for what is done and not done.
2) You can only reassign assessments that are on that computer. if you make an assignment on say a laptop at home it will work at home but not on your school computer.
3) Here's what I do with my personal assessments or smp files. I have a set on my school server with a backup on a 250GB flash drive, costs about a $100 (or probably less now). I can carry it around with me and plug up to anything.
Hope this helps
Jim

Just to verify:
1) So SmartMusic does close an assessment whose due date is at the end of a term, when the term changes. So to avoid that, you make the due date at the end of the year.
2) You can't reassign from any computer other than the one you've made the assignment on. That's too bad; here's a product request for SmartMusic. That file should be able to be reassigned from any computer running a "paid version" of SmartMusic (by definition, they all would be, but I'm just making it clear).
3) I'm just thinking that if you are an educator and you upload a SMP file or mp3 file for an assessment, as a music teacher who has paid for the music teacher features of SmartMusic, those files should be accessible in your account. If they can keep mp3s active in teacher and student accounts, SMP files should be available anywhere, too.
In other words, make it easy for the teacher who has paid $140 for the educator subscription and $36 for a SmartMusic subscription to be able to work on both a computer at home or at school with the files they've uploaded.
Thanks again, Jim. I appreciate it. | Back to Top | | Forum Information | Currently it is Tuesday, December 19, 2023 7:39 PM (GMT -6) There are a total of 403,820 posts in 58,165 threads. In the last 3 days there were 0 new threads and 0 reply posts. View Active Threads
