I am trying to use a composite time signature: 10/4 (3/4 + 3/4 + 4/4). The difficulty comes because I would like to show BOTH time signatures with the composite parts in parentheses. How do I do this? I have not found anything in the documentation that allows me to do this. I have no trouble creating the composite time signature of 3/4 + 3/4 + 4/4. Incidentally, I am running Fin 2k4. Thanks in advance.

I think you'll need to create the composite part as a shape expression and place it in the staff aftar the 10/4. If you create it as a note expresion and attach it to the first note, then select note atached expressions in music spacing options, it will properly shift the notes to the right so as to not overlao the shape signature.

Thanks for your assistance. I was hoping I had just missed something and there was an easier way than doing this. The finale graphic too is not the easiest to use. I have used it in the past to create (duple 1/8ths = duple 1/8ths) to indicate a change from swing to straight 1/8ths without have to use verbose directions and different notation.

Hi Justin,
For what you want to do, can you not use the composite time signature tool to create the actual time signature? Then all you'd have to create are the largish parenthesis (which you might be able to do with fonts and the text tool).
You could put the 10/4 in an otherwise blank measure with no bar line. Shrink the measure until it just fits the 10/4 nicely, then put the 3/4 + 3/4 + 4/4 with parenthesis around it in the first real measure.
There are advantages to making it all one single graphic, but I thought this might be easier. :-)

Ron,

That's a clever way to do the same thing! I am not sure I would have thought of that, but I can certainly see its' merits! I do appreciate your suggestion and will file that one in my finale rolodex for future use...

Let me explain more thoroughly my own situation. In addition to the 10/4 (3/4 + 3/4 + 4/4), I must use dashed barlines within the measure to show the divisions of the bar. I am showing the 10/4 time signature throughout each measure but am using the appropriate underlying time signature as the fundamental basis of each measures time signature. The good thing about this particular work is that I only need to state the 10/4 (3/4 + 3/4 + 4/4) one time at the beginning of the piece. Contrast that with the thought that if it was my own original piece, I would just use changing meters as that is the easiest thing to do. As it stands however, I am doing a transcription of a major orchestral work for for full concert band and I am following the composer's original manuscript as faithfully as is possible within the context of a transcription.
