When I go into smartmusic and try to do a method book or and exersize it will list all of the songs and such, but it shows no notes on the notation screen when I want to play one.

Try installing the fontpack that you can download from www.finalemusic.com/downloads/

In the name box, type in fontpack (no spaces) and click Search. Download the Windows one and install it. Restart the computer and see if things are in place.

Windows XP, all updates
