Well, I've skipped Yosemite and installed the latest version of El Capitan. I have also installed Finale 25. I have a question about the default page though. Should I design one from scratch or can I export the one I use in 2012 as an MXL file and then bring it in to 25 and save it as my Maestro font default?

Just open the 2012 file in v25, save, and use that as the new default file.

I would save the data as a Library, and import it into the .musx Maestro Default, rather than going XML. I'm not sure that XML saves document options. (In fact, XML and MIDI files use the default file as a basis.)

Then save it as your default file (setting its name in Finale Preferences); and also in your Document Styles folder, for use in Setup Wizard.

Finale never recognized it as the Maestro Font Default file.

Wiggy,
I opened the 2012 Maestro Font Default file in 25 and saved it as a library but it wasn't recognized as the default file either. As a matter of fact 25 said that the default file could not be located and told me it would create a file without any libraries loaded and that I should reinstall the default file. Here's the window. I've tried reinstalling again but there's no Maestro Font Default file to be found. So, I deleted the Maestro Font Default file that was there and tried again nut no Maestro Font default page is in the default files folder.

Then you know the problem was something inside your User Library in the old account. Rather than "slash and burn" to the new account, I would go back to the old account and try to fix the problem. Perhaps copy the entire MakeMusic Finale 25 folder from the new account to the old one.

If you're a long time Finale user, there's a lot of old, unnecessary crap in your user account. Same with many other applications.

Find and purge is one way. Biting the bullet and doing a clean and install is the other way.

I did a clean job install two years ago — my first in over 20 years. Cleaned out 200G of PPC crap. It was a good thing for me but I hope never to do another.

200 Gigs of PPC apps? That must have been all of them! :p

I've not done a clean install since about 2003 probably. My current MBP system disk is a clone of one from my 2009 MacBook, which was migrated from my 2006 iMac, which was migrated from my G3 iBook. Every new OS has been updated over the existing installation. There's almost certainly some "cruft" from 10.2, and all points in between, on my 10.12 disk. But I don't think it amounts to much.

I had a lot of old apps and junk going back to my Mac+. Now that I recall, I had done a clean install on my Performa 6200 so it must have been further back than I remembered.

I don't believe in clean installs but a major bug in OS 10.9.4 (fixed in 10.9.5) forced the issue. My system does run better but it took me three days to rebuild from scratch. Thank goodness for Time Machine—I was able to copy all of my files from the backup.

At that time, I moved a lot of ancient history over to a G4 I set up to boot into 9.22 and 10.4.11. With a 30 year back catalog, I still have occasions to go back to old files and update them.

Disregarding what system you are on, I find an update to 25 necessary if you use playback. If not, I would just stick where you are.

25 feels slightly peppier than previous versions, but not enough to really plunk down the money.

But I have no complaints about 25. It works as expected.

I have been using F25 for about 2 months now. I note that many are content with this version but I find myself getting annoyed with the lag when using Special tools and some other speed issues especially in page view. Some operations require a 3 to 5 second delay, even nudging notes with the arrow keys. I find that working with a single page in page view helps somewhat. Is there a fix for this I don't know about? Is F25.1 better? I'm using El Capitain on a just purchased iMac i7 with 8 gigs of ram and a flash drive.

Not seen any delay of that length. Report it to MM. Perhaps there's something particular to your setup.

25.1 is a bug fix upgrade to 25, so yes, you should definitely apply the upgrade.
