In writing hymns, many times the verses do not fall right on the downbeat, and require a pick-up measure. No problem. However, at the end of the verse, the final measure is truncated, to compliment the pick-up. For example, in "Away in a Manger", written in 3/4, the verse begins on beat 3 of the pick-up measure, but ends with a half-note on beats 1&2 of the final measure. (Beat 3 of the final measure becomes the pick-up measure for verse 2.)
3 | 1 & 2 & 3 | 1 2 3 | | 1 2 3 | 1 2 |
1. A-| way in a | man-ger, no | . . . |sleep on the | hay. |
2. The| cat - tle are| low-ing, the| . . . |morn-ing is | nigh.|
Using PrintMusic 2008, I can only come up with two equally cumbersome work-arounds.
First, I can finish the final measure with the note and lyric for the next verse and place a forward repeat at measure 1 (following the pick-up measure). This worked musically, but is confusing for the congregation.
3 ||: 1 & 2 & 3 | 1 2 3 | | 1 2 3 | 1 2 3 :||
1. A-||: way in a | man-ger, no | . . . |sleep on the | hay.(2.The :||
2. ||: cat - tle are| low-ing, the| . . . |morn-ing is | nigh.(3.Be :||
Second, I have tried to shorten the last measure by changing the time signature to 2/4, hoping to be able to hide the graphic (no such luck), plus, when the playback went back to the beginning, there were 2 beats of the pick-up measure before the second verse began.
(1 2) 3 | 1&2 & 3 | 1 2 3 | | 1 2 3 | 1 2 |
1. A-| way in a | man-ger, no | . . . |sleep on the |24 hay. |
2. - - The| cat- tle are| low-ing, the| . . . |morn-ing is | nigh.|
Is there another/better way, or am stuck by the limitations of PrintMusic and my budget?

Which is not to say that it's not worth it, but it would depend on the individual. There are a couple of things that I wish PrintMusic would do, too, that don't have workarounds. But it still isn't important enough for me to go the extra hundreds of dollars. Mike Rosen

| Dave BTW Bytheway Dave, what's your last name?
Date Joined Dec 1998 Total Posts : 421 | Posted 9/3/2008 9:47 AM (GMT -6) | | Let me just say, that I have NEVER regretted the purchase of the full version of Finale. It was a sacrifice for sure in cash, and there are many Finale features that I don't use (and may never use given the amateur status of my musical ambitions). But when I want to do something, just like the above question, then I can. I do not consider this a waste of money in any account. My time messing with things is worth something as well.
When I first evaluated my choice for notation, it was a long time ago. I tried the three front runners at the the time, Music Printer Plus, Encore, and Finale 2.2. I had to save up extra to get Finale. But being a computer power user, I felt so restricted by the other choices. Much like many complain about Sibelius now.
So I do not see it as a waste of money, or not getting what you pay for at all. Sorry Mike that you seem to think it not worth the upgrade cost. I still do not see it as money floating away, because you DO get what you pay for. I thought the "education" discount applied to people associated with the church as well. I could be wrong on that, but it sticks in my memory. (I'm guessing that this might apply to our poster.) Ron, composer www.RonaldJBrown.com

Religious Institution, Music Minister or Music Ministry Representative
Nonprofit with a separate house of worship or currently employed by a religious institution.
Proof of nonprofit status and tax-exempt number and a letter on official letterhead defining the buyer as the religious institution's official representative.
So even those are pretty restrictive. Even though I do lots of notation for my synagogue choir, I wouldn't meet these specs. Mike Rosen
