Have Garritan Personal Orchestra. I do like many of the samples. But using VST disables MIDI in Finale 2012. And I see nothing to indicate this issue has changed in Finale 2014.

I want to use MIDI to play an organ with Garritan Instruments playing along.

I want to know if there is any work-around I can use.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Why not use the Softsynth organ?

The workaround would be to use Garritan as a standalone application connected to Finale with virtual MIDI. Then use real MIDI to connect to your organ.

Bill,

I'm a long-time MIDI user. I date back to the older Cakewalk days. I know that some sequencers can be linked to work together.

But I'm still a novice at using Finale. And I'm even more of a nube where the Garritan voices are concerned.

I'd appreciate a little more detail how what you've described work.

Thanks,

Ron,

My church has a nice hybrid organ. I cannot imagine any Softsynth organ voices that could even come close to matching what we have.

There's also a free VST called "MidiOUT.dll" which can send Midi out only, when Finale is in VST mode. You will have to change the "isSynth" parameter form 0 to 1 in the file "FinaleVST_Validated.txt" for Finale 2012 to recognize it. I haven't tried it in 2014, but used it daily for over a year without problems in 2012c.

If you still use Cakewalk (Sonar?), you could try porting the Finale MIDI file into Cakewalk, which can use the Garritan VST and may give you the additional ability to port a MIDI channel to your organ.

If you want to play the organ at church with a Garritan accompaniment, why not simply export an audio file of the Garritan sounds and play the organ to that recording.

Where did you get the DLL?  A Google search leads to too many broken links and warnings.  Is it safe?

Thanks.  I'll be giving it a try.

[UPDATE] Where is this "FinaleVST_Validated.txt" file, or its equivalent located.  I cannot find it.  The "MidiOUT" does not show with a rescan of the VST directories.  That is where I assume the DLL must be placed.

not at the computer at the moment, but from memory: (user)...appdata...roaming...makemusic..finale2012...vstsupport... (?) If you have the 32bit version it should be recognized as an effect, but not as a (note producing) "synth" until the value is changed.

I found the file and two other similarly named files (FinaleVST_*.txt) in the F2011 directory tree, but can find nothing in F2012, F2014, or F2014.5.

These text files are generated as necessary, so go into "Manage VST Plugins" in the midi/audio menu and make sure Finale can find the VST. When you restart Finale it should find and check the new VST and validate it as an effect only. Then you will change the text file so that it will also show as an instrument.

Refreshing my memory, I now also see that I used this procedure with success in 2014d. The text file is now called "vst_x86.cache" and reside in "...appdata>roaming>makemusic>finale>plougeEngine". It's still a text file, so you may just have to rename it for editing and renaming it back when done.

HOWEVER: the VST MidiOUT.dll (at least the version I have) is NOT compatible with Finale 2014. Instead I used a VST called "VST2MID.dll". This is all old stuff, but working fine. I just found it here: http://www.tobybear.de/files.html (it's INSIDE the VSTNETMID folder in the MidiBAG download)

nordensten,

Thanks for all the help on this.  I now have the vst_x86.cache file in the directory you specified.  When I open it in my text editor, it is not obvious to me what needs to be changed/added to make the VST an instrument.  Can you provide any guidance?  I have attached the file.  Thanks.

Also, when I open the ARIA player or the freeware Plogue sforzando player, I see no reference to the Tobybear VST in the Effects tab/pane.  Am I missing something?

To bachon, the OP, sorry to have hijacked this thread!

At the end of the appropriate line, just change ";0" to ";1" ...

I'm not familiar with the Aria player, so can't help there. Basically, if a program has access to the same file path to the VST, it should show up. If not, it means the application does not accept/validate it. Generally, not all DAWs accept VSTs as Midi inserts, although most seem to do so.

Since you have been using Finale since V1.0 to the present, I find it hard to understand why you would not be familiar with the ARIA player.  It has been the VST player used by Finale and Garritan for some time now.  Anyway, thanks for your help on this.  I now have VST2MID showing up as device/instrument in the Score Manager/VST Banks and Effects windows, although I still do not see it as an effect anywhere.  Now all I need to do is hook up my MIDI synth (Roland D10) and see if I can get it to play along with some GPO4 instruments, as advertised, and just what the OP, bachon ordered!  More on that later.

BTW:  The MidiOUT VST showed up, but crashed Finale hard, so I removed it.

I'm bringing this to the top of the list rather than post as an edit of my last post.

I am pleased to announce that using the VST2MID module, that was brought to my attention by nordensten, allowed me to assign several voices to GPO4 instruments and several more to be routed to MIDI and all to play simultaneously.  This is just what the OP, bachon, was requesting.

Its use is simple.  Just choose it from among the Devices available in the Score Manager and click on edit player.  The VST2MID GUI is simple and clean.  It allows you to choose which of the MIDI out devices you have installed to use.  I chose the MIDISport 2x2 Out A, an old, i.e. ancient, USB to MIDI controller I have hooked between my computer and my Roland D10 synth.  Worked like a charm.

So, I would recommend a similar setup for bachon so he can send MIDI data to his church organ as well as play GPO4 instruments simultaneously.

Thanks again nordensten.

I want to thank the people here for this point. I downloaded the files, though I haven't yet installed or got things working. But it sounds like the solution I've been looking.

Thanks!
