1) Software which is not overtly Internet-related (eg browsers, email clients, etc) should not attempt to connect without explicit user intervention (eg, choosing a "Check for Updates" or "Authorize This Installation" option) - it's both a security issue, and one of plain "good manners".
2) Most versions of Finale in recent years have only received a few updates, ever - in the case of 2003, just one ("a"); 2005, two ("b"). OK, so 2006 went all the way to "c" (three updates), and "d" on the Mac. Moreover, the window for updates is limited to about one year, which is MM's product life cycle. Having an option that checks the MM website every time the software is run, forever, seems to be way over the top.
3) Following from the second point, anyone running Finale 2006 is still "checking for updates", even though 2007 is out, and we all know there never will be any more. Why? Some software companies (obviously not MM!?!) could use such an auto-connect "update check" to enforce a maximum lifetime for a given software release: imagine if, one day, you tried to run Finale 2006, it responded by telling you that since Finale 2009 was now available, it would not longer run, and you were going to have to upgrade.
Like I said, obviously MM would not do this, but other software companies do just this sort of thing, right now.
Non-Internet software should never connect to the Internet without an explicit user intervention, and then only with their informed permission.
