Anyway, this made it much more accessible than the current location, buried in the program options, and made it seem like more of a document specific thing. 13" MacBook Pro 2.8 Ghz. As Far As I Know, most settings for Music Spacing and Layout are document specific, e. g. Document Options > Music Spacing and Document menu > Page Format > …
The only program specific settings I can find, are the Automatic Settings: Automatic Music Spacing Automatic Update Layout
In your poll you are talking about “The Music Spacing and Layout settings”. Do you mean Automatic Music Spacing and Automatic Update Layout - and no other settings for Music Spacing and Layout?

And of course, if you define your page format in the first place with Document -> Page Format, then any added pages will be created with that format, and you don't have to go back and redefine.

This action has never made sense to me… It sounds like “Update Page Format for Score” is de-selected (in the Page Layout menu).
If “Update Page Format for Score” is selected, then any page format changes you do, are automatically updated in {Page Format forScore} so that all new systems/pages will continue whatever page format changes you have done.
The only question that remains, is:
* Mike, would you prefer “Update Page Format for Score” to be program specific, or document specific?

I think that's somethng that could be a program option. I can't foresee NOT wanting that to happen. I could be wrong here, but I think that “Update Page Format for Score” is program specific, rather than document specific.
Perhaps you personally “can't foresee NOT wanting” the automatic update to happen, but imagine this:
Because one of the systems only holds two measures, you make it shorter, e. g. only half of the page width. Later on you add more systems, and because “Update Page Format for Score” was selected, all the new systems are only half of the page width.
In short: Sometimes it is best to have “Update Page Format for Score” de-selected, sometimes it is best to have it selected - even when working on the same document.
You can keep “Update Page Format for Score” selected, and make it a habit that you, after an “odd” system margin edit, reset Page Format for Score to “normal”.
