Still trying to resolve problems with an A3 sized orchestral score with pretty small staves  (around 40 instruments or so to a page on some of the pages).  The most noticeable problem is that the print quality of the stave lines is poor.  The lines are grey rather than black when looked at in Adobe Illustrator and are very uneven in quality.  I have read somewhere else on the forum that this stave line thing is a known problem with EPS page esport from the graphics menu under advanced tools.
 
Can anyone tell me of any work around?  I have to use the EPS page export because the paginator I pass the EPS files on to needs to see some kind of preview.
 
I gather that the postcript listing method may give better results - but the files I have so far produced with that seem to give weird layout results - and I get no Tiff preview by that method either.  Does Finale 2008a make any improvement on this EPS export

EPS export (and import for that matter) is less than optimal, to say the least, and may actually be a waste of time.
However, can you let us know what you mean by "uneven in quality" when viewed in Illustrator? Different line thicknesses?
And what percentage of Black are the staff lines displaying?

The Compile Postscript item in the File menu produces the best results, though the dialog box only gives a few page sizes in the drop-down list, which is not affected by the active PPD. Tsk. Also, make sure the dimension numbers in the text fields of the dialog are correct. Mine, by default, give numbers in the tens of thousands!

You can then PDF the PS/EPS and import that into your pagination program.

Alternatively, can you print to a PDF print queue? That might also work better. Most DTP can import PDFs just as well - if not better - than EPSes.

When you set up line weights in Finale, Finale converts any measurements used to the nearest EDU value. When compiling postscript it converts back to points. Due to rounding errors, you can set up a line thickness in points, export to Illustrator and get different values, especially if there is a page, system or staff reduction involved.

getting more consistent results can often be achieved by making Finale's line thicknesses marginally thicker.

This is a very similar problem to that experienced by anyone who creates PDFs from Finale. Playing with different (staff) line thicknesses might yield better results.

Ok thanks for those answers. I tried the pdf print and import into InDesign and this seems to work a bit better than EPS page export anyway. However one problem we are noticing with the print out - although it is OK in the pdf is that the middle bar of the 3 on tremelando markings is getting whited out
- I guess this is a printer problem really.

Is the pdf print + import into a package such as InDesign noticeably better in Finale 2008a
If anybody knows I'd be real grateful to know

The lastest font pack (available from the MakeMusic site) should have fixed that.  However, Brian pointed out that there are other issues with the new font pack.

Yes, the latest font pack fixes the issue with the middle slash in the Maestro font's tremolando marking.

Another solution is to use the Engraver font's tremolando marking.

Although sadly at the expense of font accuracy - MakeMusic didn't go back to the original Fontographer sources and change the offending characters, but rather imported their existing fonts into an editor, fixed the problem, and re-exported. The result was a lossy degradation of the font, with the inclusion of dozens of new and unwanted control points. I've decided to stick with the old font, and live with the slash problem.
