This has the advantage of allowing the cursor to stay where it is on the screen and I can keep my eye on it while changing tools.
Two tools resist this approach: Simple Entry and Smart Shapes. In both cases TG Tools requires defining a specific sub-selection; for instance, you can't just specify "Simple Entry" tool, you have to specify "Simple Entry -> Quarter Note" or some other specific sub-selection.
If I click the Simple Entry tool button I get whatever settings were in effect when I left the tool, which is really desirable. But then I have to move the cursor, click, and move it back, taking extra time and interrupting my train of thought.
It would be really helpful if that sub-selection weren't required. I suspect it's not a TG Tools issue; if you could select Simple Entry on the Tools menu without having to make a sub-selection. I'm pretty sure TG Tools wouldn't require the sub-selection either. Same with Smart Shapes.
Alternatively, a sub-selection menu item could be added: "Previous Selection" perhaps, or something equivalent.
Curiously, I can program a function-key equivalent for tools such as Simple Entry and Smart Shape that have the desired effect (i.e., not moving the cursor and remembering the prior settings), but these programmed keys are document-specific and have to be set up for each new (or ancient) document - and my personal preference is for a keystroke other than a function key (I'm partial to Ctl-Sft-some letter near the first three fingers of my left hand).
Am I missing something here? Are there other possibilities? Intel Core i5-2310 CPU @ 2.90GHz 16 GB Windows 10.0.14393.51 Finale 25.0.0.6858 HP LaserJet 1350 Epson WF-7110 Epson Artisan 837 | Back to Top | |

For example, I use F5 for layer one, F2 for layer two, F10 for slur, CTRL-S for staff, and a bunch of others. They work in any version of Finale, on any document.
It's probably a difference in the operating systems. Mike Rosen www.specialmillwork.com

Finale 2014.5 on El Capitan Simple Entry, QWERTY keyboard, numberpad. That's my system, and I'm stickin' to it.

Then all new documents will have the desired document-specific items. You will still have to add them to the already existing documents.
