Does anyone know how to set the last measure of music in Finale - Guitar that has a pickup measure so that it take into consideration the pickup measure?
For example, in the attached file, there is a pickup note at the beginning that I inserted, but Finale adds a rest at the end of the measure; how can I stop Finale from adding the rest?

There are many of us who would argue that there's absolutely nothing wrong with having that rest at the end of the last measure. Now that it's there, you can make it invisible, though that won't remove it from playback. Simple and Speedy options include Fill the Measure With Rests that can be turned off.

My freshman theory prof would mark our excercises down if we didn't account for the pickup measure in the last bar (ohmygod, that's 30 years ago now!), so I can sympathize. Here's what I'd do in your situation.

Before entering anything in the last bar, change the time signature to 5/8.

Select the Measure tool, double click the last measure, & select "Hide time signature" in the dialog box.

Hope this helps.

When in Simple Entry, click on SIMPLE at the top of the screen, the unclick FILL WITH RESTS AT END OF MEASURE, then erase the unwanted rest. The rest will still occur on playback but if staring another verse afterwards, most people would be grabbing a breath about then so it shouldn't be a real problem. If it is, the hidden time signature change will take care of it.

Strictly speaking, the pickup notes are borrowed from the last measure. In the real world we live in, I see this rule violated in commercial music so often I don't even worry about it anymore. I bend or even break a lot of rules if makes the music easier to read or sound better. How you treat it depends on your target audience.

Frankly, I doubt that anyone other than the most hide-bound academics would even consider it a rule any more.

(Currently using: Finale 2003a, Windows XP-Home, TGTools 2.25, and The Glenlivet when I can afford it.)

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

Thanks to Jim Murphy for his suggestion of changing the time signature to get rid of the extra rests for a pick-up measure at the beginning and at the end of a song in Finale - Guitar. It did indeed work!

I agree. It really only makes sense as a "rule" in simple song forms where you repeat from the end back to the beginning. In anything more complex it makes no sense at all.

It's really simple now that I've done it many times. I just define each measure for time signature and not worry about any other measur, and Finale - Guitar does the rest.

With Finale - Guitar I've been translating years of ensemble music I've collected and I'm just now listening and playing along with it. This is great.

If you are interested in some samples, send me you email.

Thanks again for the help buddy.
