When I installed the Sierra operating system, all of my tool palettes work incorrectly. They now only show 1 or 2 of the symbols within each particular palette. This is very frustrating for me because I have my Finale desktop set up a certain way. Anyone know what to do to fix this?

Thanks

Ed

I think that all that any of us can do, is wait for the promised update.

Seems that if "large tool icons" is not ticked, and the palettes are horizontal, then they might be OK.

Seems that moving them around and changing the shape causes the problem.
Don't try it!

I also found that resizing the palette brought back the missing icons. (if my signature has not updated yet, I'm on Sierra 10.12, running Finale "25" and Finale 2014.5)

They hire their developers in kindergarten of what ?
You should be ashamed MM.

Yikes, me too! Most of the main tool palette suddenly showed up blank. Never happened to me before. Seems tied to upgrading to Mac OS 12 recently (Sierra); that's the only thing I can think of that changed.

Here's my workaround: After much trial and error I re-sized to three columns and all tiles reappeared, partially obscured but functional. No other configuration works. One can also select tools via the Tools menu but in decades of using Finale I found that inefficient except when I couldn't remember which symbol represented some function I hardly ever used.

Although I can live with this workaround, I hate the fact that MakeMusic doesn't keep their product current with the Mac OS. My software (v. 2014.5) is only a year old. Does anyone know, was this glitch fixed in the new version (called Finale 25)? I've asked MM if they were going to issue a maintenance update for Finale 2014 (i.e. fix the glitches sans the new features) and basically they said shell out the 150 bucks.

Finale 25.1 (second version!) fixes this problem. I find this version faster and more reliable than a number of previous versions. MM is working hard at it!

How many companies fix old versions after the next one has been released? If you want to stay current, be current.

Finale used to be a $99–$129 paid upgrade every year; now it's every other year. Even at $149, it's a savings.

Buy the update on Monday, November 28. It will be on sale for $99.

Many resellers including Musicians Friend have had the upgrade for $119 since day one.

I had problems upgrading using the Chrome browser. FireFox worked. Did not try Safari.

Thanks, Vaughan and Mike. You make some good points. Still, I think expensive software should be glitch-free by the second or third release and should be maintained for at least a year to keep up with system upgrades -- which come out with plenty of notice. I know Make Music has been trying hard and I recognize the progress they have made. But they haven't yet met the standards Coda set for Finale over most of its life. Yes, Finale used to be upgraded almost annually, but the company supported the previous couple versions so that users did not have to buy upgrades every year. And the prices were competitive if you upgraded every two or three years. At least that's was my experience as a Finale user since 1992, with a paid upgrade every two years on average. I hope Make Music's investment in 64-bit programming "under the hood" will pay off. And I'm glad they are offering a $99 sale in a couple days. I'll take advantage of that.

Finale 2014 was released in November 2013. Finale 2014.5 was a free update issued 2 years later, the purpose of which was largely to keep up with OS upgrades.

Apple schedules a new OS every 12 months, and gives developers 6 months' preview. However, early builds of the new OS often have bugs and it can be unclear for some time whether a problem needs to be fixed by Apple or the developer.

Ha! I forgot that 2014 was actually released in 2013. Had I given it any thought, I'd have remembered.

Revising my earlier statement, 2012, released in 2011, is now 5 years old when OS 10.7 was current. 2014 came out for Mavericks, OS 10.9.

That either still work at all in El Cap or Sierra, given that neither adheres closely to the Apple Developers Toolkit, is pretty good.
