In the attached document, I am able to beam the flagged stem of the B note in the second measure to the preceding golpe (x|) stem that is in layer 4, by settings beams to extend over rests. But then the rests elsewhere in the score get beamed, which I prefer not to have beamed.

I tried changing the notehead to one with a stem without a flag, using #113 in Note Shape Tool, but Finale writes the note with a flagless stem one semitone higher and does not replace the flag. I can draw an artificial beam with the Custom Line Tool, but the flag remains an issue.

Is there a way to get Finale to extend beams over rests in just one measure, without affecting the rest of the document?

my first thought would be to notate the B as a quarter note and apply a hidden tuplet (1 quarter in the space of 1 eight) to it, and fake the beam. I'm sure others will chime in with more elegant solutions.

Sorry, but this is quite unclear to me...there is no B in measure two, only three b flats, two of them tied together.

You can beam over rests manually with the numberpad's / key. Place the speedy entry cursor on the rest(s), hit /, then place the cursor over the note after the rest(s) and hit / again.

Yes Peter, what you have is what I seek. But I want to beam over the rest only in the two measures, not throughout the score. Were able to extend the beam only in the one measure?

Nordensten's method of assigning a quarter note to be played as 1/8th and hiding the bracket worked. Thank you veeeeery much.

I also tried HaraldS's interesting method, but it did not work for me; and I made sure the NumLock was on. Maybe he overlooked a step. Below is what I tried,

1. Speedy Entry Tool -> place cursor on the rest.
2. Press "/" key on Number Pad.
3. Place cursor on note after the rest -> press "/" key again.

Is there another step as nothing happens to this point?

If it was me, I would choose to beam over rests, then manually unbeam everywhere else. That seems easiest to me. It's what HaraldS has suggested. Am I missing something?

Thanks for the option Zuill. I did not understand HaraldS to mean using the option you mention. He talks about using the slash key on the Number Pad of the keyboard to manually beam the two notes, which did not work for me. Maybe I have misunderstood.

I think Harald was suggesting that the / key will beam over rests with the document option off. I couldn't get that to work, but I may well be missing something, or perhaps Harald is talking about beaming across rests.

Zuill's suggestion to turn the document option on, then using the / key to unbeam where you don't want it, will definitely work; you may or may not have a lot of manual unbeaming to do.

What if you put the B in layer 4?

This is perfectly allright, but perhaps doesn't fit for your situation. It's just the general procedure to include rests under a beam. So I apologize if it doesn't fit your needs: as said above, I don't understand the situation fully, as I can't match your description with the attached file. But never mind, I was only referring to the speedy entry function described here: "To create or break a beam, position the insertion bar on the second note of the pair and press the slash (/) or B key. If the notes were flagged separately, they’re now beamed; if they were beamed, the beam is broken (and the notes are individually flagged, if they’re not beamed to any other notes). Use SHIFT+B to restore the beaming to the defaults found in Document Options - Beams."

Such a beam can be removed or added with the slash key if "Document Options / Beams / Extend beams over rests" is checked, but the slash key will not add a beam if that option is not checked.

OK. That works. Thanks.

Due to the number of beamed rests I would need to unbeam in my score, I opted to go with Nordensten's approach, which is to use Alt + 9 and write the note as a 1/4 note played in the time of 1/8th, hide the tuplet bracket then draw an artificial beam with the Custom Line tool (see attached).
