I could swear, but can't reproduce, that occasionally upon opening a file I have worked on in the recent past some information is lost. Specifically, I'm pretty sure that I reduced the staff size to 85%. But when I open the file later and click the resize tool then click the staff, it says it's at 100%. I can tell by looking that it's not at 100%. Resize page is also at 100% which is where I expect it to be.
Has anyone else seen something like this happen?
Thanks,
Paula

Hello Paula,
I don't think Finale has ever had a bug losing this kind of information. However, resizing the staff doesn't always apply to the whole piece, so that it might be resized on some pages but not on others, or when you add new measures, they might appear in staves the original size.

If you've verified the staff resize, take a look at staff systems resize as well.
Best regards,

Also, it's easy to resize the system on accident, rather than the staff, with the same visual results. Check all of the possibilities by right-clicking to get a list of things you can resize.

System size was the problem, though I'm not sure how I did that. In any case, I've fixed the problem. Thank you for the help.

Paula -
I don't know if your current topic still relates to hymns, but if so, let me add this - which
may (or may not) relate to the current (staff size) and previous post (stem lengths). I was
part of a hymnal project a few years ago, so I understand the space issue. Some things
have fixed sizes - page dimensions, margins, titles, composers, and other text items, for
example. The music spacing offers just a bit of latitude.
In our project, we set the minimum measure width (in music spacing options) to zero,
having learned that when text is inserted, it is the words that are the determinants of
horizontal spacing, not the notes (except for melismatic chant-like passages). We also
fought through issues of type point size, verse baseline distances, page reduction
percentage, etc. A completed hymnal needs to be consistent in these regards, whereas an
occasional hymn-sheet allows far more individuality.
I was amazed to learn that no matter how many times I typeset hymns, each remained an
individual challenge. One would think that simple formulas would emerge, but hymns
have remarkable individuality. Many pages, of course, were easier than others, but
nothing could be taken for granted. As has been preached on this forum many times, the
end result must be user-friendly. That's nearly always easier said than done.
