If you have a scanned picture of the score, learn how to use Simple or Speedy entry, to get the notes into Finale. If all you have is the CD, you will have to rely on your ears to transcribe the part. But you will still need to learn Finale!

| Posted 10/10/2014 8:45 AM (GMT -6) | | Mike and Jetcopy are correct. There are no shortcuts available for transcribing music from audio automatically. There are a number of tools available that can assist but these are complex (and sometimes costly) professional tools with steep learning curves. In my experience, scans of complex classical pieces imported into Finale need so much editing that it is faster and easier to input them as Jetcopy suggests. I transcribe a lot of music both for the choir that I sing in and for my new business (Shameless plug!  mystudyscores.com ). Looking at a few of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas on IMSLP, transcribing a violin part is about 1-2 hours work for me at the most. The piano parts are another story and would take 8-12 hours since they are much more complex with multiple layers, etc.
If you need this right away, you should hire someone with the expertise to do it quickly to your satisfaction. If you aren't in a hurry, buckling down and going through the Finale tutorials and really learning the program (Practice! Practice! Practice! ) will have long term rewards if this is a skill set that you may find useful in the future. Transcribing great music is a very effective way to become both an expert in Finale and in the music itself.

I have spent the last few days transcribing a piano arrangement of an old hymn. This is part of a note I sent my client who is a good piano player who created this arrangement. I spent about 30 hours transcribing the 43 measures in his piano arrangement. I am a pretty good piano player and a 19 year user of Finale
This transcription is done by copying your CD into the Cakewalk Sonar program on a second computer. The Sonar program lets me slow down the tempo to about a third of the speed you are playing. I then select one measure and constantly play that one measure (loop) in Sonar until I can play that measure (one hand) from my memory and in meter on my Finale input keyboard. I then play that measure into Finale and get the notated transcription. I do the left hand alone and then the right hand alone or vice versa. It is easy to spend 15 minutes on a measure because of the complexity of your arrangement. (Yes I do have to listen to one measure over and over for 15 minutes to figure out how the notes are to appear on paper.) I work on the notes out on a blank scratch pad measure and then drag them to the keyboard line.
I would be interested in any thoughts from you folks who do this for a living.
