Is anyone currently running Finale 2011 on El Capitan? I realize that Human Playback will cause a crash (I rarely use it in my work) and the "Check for Upgrade" box will probably continue to appear every time on startup. Are there any other potential problems I should be aware of? Any advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I will probably upgrade to the next version of Finale when it is released.

Incompatible.

In fact, with OS 10.11.6, released yesterday, only Finale 2014.5 will run.

Thanks, Mike. I was afraid that might be the case.

Incompatible might not be the best word. There are a couple known issues that will cause crashes, but you can work around most of them. Here's what will cause a crash:

Playback with human playback turned on
Plackback through the AU engine (works fine through midi playback)

Otherwise, I've orchestrated 100's of cues with 2011 on El Capitan, without any real issue.

Jeremy, have you tried this in 10.11.6?

Not that intend to go back to F 2011 but I am curious.

I'm on 10.11.5, but was assured from the Finale folks it works fine on 10.11.6, as well.

as long as you avoid human playback and AU. Ok.

Thanks, Mike and Jeremy. The reason I asked this question is that Box Sync, which I am required to use for employment purposes, will no longer work on 10.9.5 as of August 1. Thus, I need to upgrade my operating system. Given what Jeremy says, I guess I'll cross my fingers and upgrade. As I mentioned, I hardly ever use Human Playback and I don't use AU at all. Luckily, my wife has a old iMac that I can use for Finale 2011 if I find that the problems of running 2011 on El Capitan are too restrictive.

Hi

I would suggest contacting Box and finding out what they mean.
A lot of the time notifications like that rarely mean that the program will stop working full stop. (I mean, there are a number of people who are using old macs and still access box)
Keep an eye on this and similar threads
to verify whether there is a real need to upgrade your OS.

If Box will continue to work as a file sync service, just not actively supporting your version of the OS, you might be able to continue as you are.

Just a thought.

Cheers...

Excellent points, Daz. I will investigate further with Box and also see what our IT staff at work recommend.

Here is the official "End-of-Life" (EOL) notice from Box (I'll post the "in-product notification" when it comes up again).

"On 8/1/2016 Box Sync will no longer be supported on Mac OS X 10.9. Per our OS support policy, we maintain support for Box on only the two latest versions of Mac OS X. Users must be on a supported OS (OS X 10.10 or OS X 10.11) following the EOL date. In the month prior to the EOL date, users will see an in-product notification informing them that support for 10.9 will end soon and that they should update their OS. Following the EOL date, users will still be able to access Box Sync on 10.9 but will be entirely unsupported by Box, including all security patches."

So it does appear that I can continue using Box Sync on 10.9.5 but there will be no support and no security patches.

Wade

Hi Wade

Sounds like there should be no particular need to upgrade unless there is a real concern regarding security (which should be pretty well stitched up by now) or you require ongoing support.

Cheers...

FWIW I'm currently using OS 10.11.6, OS 10.9.5 and OS 10.6.8 on different computers. I can still use Box with 10.6.8, but slightly indirectly.

With the 10.6.8 machine I log in to the Box web-site and then up-load or download modified files to or from my Box folder in the browser (Firefox).

With 10.9 and 10.11 I can of course work directly in the Box Sync folder on the computers, which I don't *think* I can still do with 10.6.

I don't know if this helps, but as far as I can see, one might continue to have access to Box on-line via Firefox or some other suitable browser on older Macs.

EDIT: We all seem to be saying the same thing, but I won't delete this post just now even if superfluous.
