I've been using a TIFF file for a 'long', since Finale doesn't have that.
The problem is it always prints out grayish, never solid black.

Maybe we might need to see the file to help find a solution.

Other fonts do have the long symbol - Bravura, for instance.

Wiggy,

The Bravura web site says, "If you use Finale or Sibelius and want to use Bravura for your own scores, unfortunately you cannot use the font unmodified, as neither Finale nor Sibelius (yet?) supports SMuFL, and there are technical restrictions on accessing the font or characters at the Unicode code points where they exist.

Zuill,

Here's a file.

Oh, I better send again with the long embedded.

What that means is that you can't quite use the entire font as your Default music font. (Whole rests and time sigs don't work).

You can of course select any of the characters in Bravura to use as expressions, articulations, noteheads, etc, etc. Bravura is very useful as it has thousands of symbols. But there are other fonts that have longs, maxima, etc.

I wouldn't use TIFF for a notation element -- I would use EPS or PDF.

Without seeing the graphic file, it's probably a colour separation issue. Finale has some problems with colour spaces, causing CMYK separations to have 88% K (plus other values for the other plates) for items that should be Black. It all depends on how you're printing and what you're printing to.

Once we can see the graphic, we might be able to test the situation.

Thanks you guys for the help.

Well, I've already tried printing from Finale to PDF, which does the same thing on screen, so I'm fairly sure it's not my printer. Switching from TIFF to EPS format for the graphic doesn't seem to make a difference, both print as gray, even though they are solid black graphics. So I think it must be something in Finale. I downloaded the Bravura; but all I could find was renaissance style black and white notation longs, nothing early baroque, and very sterile looking ones at that. This gave me an idea and found a breve in Meastro, but not a very good looking one either, and it needed a stem.

So long story short, I hacked one out in the shape designer hell.

Best regards

Can you post a pdf of what it looks like as is, since the graphic doesn't show in the Finale file? Maybe we can find something that works that is closer.

The graphic is linked, but not embedded, so only the marker shows. It shows for you because the graphic is on your computer. We have only the link, which is a link to nowhere.

Anyway, since you are happy, all is well.
