I installed the SmartMusic 2012 on my daughter's laptop. I checked prior to downloading to make sure that the system met the requirements, which it does. The program appears to install without any issues, then click to finish and launch the program. As the installer closes, the program start screen comes up at which time it will pause there for five minutes are longer until the next screen comes, which comes up blank. If you continue to wait for several minutes, the program then displays the sign in. I signed in and then waited again for several minutes. Was validated and the program showed up, but clicking on any link on left the left side did nothing.

I checked my internet connection, which is cable, and all the other computers, including this one, is working just fine.

Checked the firewall, which is Microsoft firewall, which SmartMusic is checked to allow access. (The laptop is running Windows 7.)

Checked for any system updates from Dell, computer up to date.

Checked MS website for any software update, OS is up-to-date.

Anti-virus software is Microsoft Security Essentials.

QuickTime and Adobe software are all up-to-date.

Checked hard drive space, 230GB free, so I would assume that is more than enough.

Ran DELL diagnostic on the computer, no issues found with memory (4GB), nothing find hard drive, or any other part of the laptop.

I'm confused. I used the same download and installed the program on my wife's computer (without activating it) and it responds just the way I expect it to. I've uninstalled SmartMusic and re-installed it twice to see if maybe something went wrong during the install, but nothing makes a difference.

Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

Brad

I have tried running the program in compatibility mode, but when it finishes, it shows that the program is incompatible. The website shows that it is compatible with Windows 7 and since it list Vista 64 bit, I've made the assumption that Windows 7 64 bit is compatible.

I think your best bet is to contact the company on Monday. It definitely is Win 7 64bit compatible (I've been using it on that primarily for 2 years now). From what you've said, it sounds like it's the web stuff that's slow (logging into assignments, activating, etc.). If you actually open a song and play it, is it fine from that point? In the past I know the website has slowed down some around peak usage times, but I'm not seeing that now. Perhaps just make sure you have tried it at some time that isn't 7-9pm on a weekday. One experiment that might be interesting would be to hook that computer up to the internet connection that your wife's computer is using, or perhaps bypass the router, just to eliminate that possibility. Your machine sounds plenty good enough for SmartMusic.

Thanks for the reply. I field out the online form requesting help. As far as internet connection, they are both wireless. I have checked the daughter's connection and the wife's and actually the laptop is getting a stronger signal when I was running the test.

So far, I haven't been able to play a song because I click on a link and then you wait and wait and wait. I was able to get the program activated, which took about 45 minutes.

I have tried the different compatibility settings (Vista, Windows XP, and even tried Windows 98/Me) with no change.

Kind of stumped as to what is going on. The only difference between the daughter and wife's computer is one is 32 and the other 64 bit. (Obviously there are driver differences since one is a desktop and one a laptop.) Hoping maybe there is a 'magic' switch I forgot to flip and tech support will be able to tell me press the 'blue' button and not the 'red' one and magically everything works. (Can't hurt to wish.)
