Hi all,

A couple of quick questions:

1. I'm hoping to upgrade my MacBook Pro to El Capitan this weekend, and I wanted to know if there are still compatibility issues with Finale 2014? (Not 14.5).

2. I've got an old Mac Pro desktop running Finale 2014 (it can't be upgraded to 14.5). If I work on a score on F14.5 on my laptop, and then transfer to F2014 on my desktop, will I have any compatibility issues in this situation?

Thanks for your help!

Cheers
ANDREW

There are definitely compatibility issues with 2014 and EC: any operation which calls up a window with multiple items (e.g. expression or articulation windows) will crash Finale. You'll have to upgrade to 2014.5 or refrain from updating to EC. BTW, are you sure you can't update to EC on your MacPro? I'm running EC on a fairly old MacPro (2008) without any problems. And there are no problems with files between 2014 and 2014.5.

Apparently now 2014 works with EC.

Thanks to Philip and Vaughan for getting back to me. Glad to hear that F14d is now compatible with EC.

Vaughan, I checked my Mac Pro, and it's definitely not able to upgrade. It's a 1,1 model, so apparently it was made in 2007. So I just missed out!

ANDREW

That'll be my fate with the next OS upgrade although I can't really complain as I've already enjoyed eight years of heavy use with this MacPro.

Hi Vaughan,

Yes, I've certainly thrashed my Mac Pro and it has been an excellent machine. In fact, I'm quite nervous about upgrading, as I don't really have a sense of what might be available these days.

A former student of mine suggested that I migrate over to a Mac Book Pro and hook that up to a larger display, but I use two monitors and I'm not sure that I can do that. Then there's the fact that my Mac Pro has 4 HD's in it, and that I use a MIO-2882 as my sound device with Logic Pro. I probably need to spend some time asking people about their current setups, and go from there. I know that I'll almost certainly use a DroBo in some way...

Regards,
ANDREW

My Mac Pro 2006 lasted about as long, but it will not upgrade beyond OS 10.8.x so it has already had to be replaced (earlier this year).

9 years is pretty good going. The family still use it for watching films on the 30 inch screen

Here it is: apparently Finale 2014d works in OS 10.11.2. Can anyone confirm?

@Peter: yes, that's been confirmed here on the forum, as well. I've tested it and neither 2012 nor 2014d crashes under EC the way it used to, i.e. when a window appears with items in it, like the articulation or expression windows. Playback with HP does still crash 2012, however.

@Andrew: Since I already have a MacBookPro (which I find really handy for work out of the house), I'll be replacing my MacPro with a new one. They're quite impressive and also very attractive. Like you, I have several [older] harddisks installed in the older one and since the concept of the new MP is different, peripherals need to be attached instead of installed. That shouldn't be a problem with 4 USB 3 ports and 6 Thunderbolt ports.

@Vaughan - I looked at the price of the new Mac Pros, and they are REALLY expensive (cheapest in Australia is $5000), even compared to the cost of my original Mac Pro way back in 2007. So I need to find an alternative solution. I like the idea of being portable with a MacBook Pro, however I must find out what this will mean in terms of using multiple screens, and as I said, what I will do with all of those HD's! I find myself working out of the studio quite a lot these days, the mobility is a good drawcard.

Cheers
ANDREW

@Andrew - I made a Finale 2014.5 and Finale 2014d setup last week on a brand new Macbook Pro Retina 2015. It came with the double video option, Intel Iris Pro built in and PCI driven AMD Radeon R9 M370X. It has also 16GB RAM and the fastest Intel Quad Core I7 clocked at 2.8 GHz. Finale runs very fast and smoothly compared to what I was used before. It handles perfect large high res. external screens coupled via MiniDisplay Portor HDMI. On top of that even my iPad Air2 is usable for extra screen real estate. (coupled via Duetdisplay software and a Lightning to USB-cable plugged into the Macbook Pro.) Concerning your HD questions, I would think most external HD's can be addressed via a Belkin Thunderbolt 2 Docking Station.

A bit to my surprise this combo works very fine and mobility with a fast working Finale "outfit" is a whole new and exciting discovery for me!

Regards, Jan.

Andrew,

FWIW, I use a Macbook Pro with a additional monitor, I have 2 thunderbolt drives daisy chained (one for time machine, the other a dedicated sample drive) and I also run Logic Pro X. My drives are 7200, but if I was buying these now, I'd get a SSD. My ram is maxed out at 16gb. When using a large orchestral template in Logic, I occasionally get stuttering, buy by purging samples in Kontakt or freezing tracks in Logic, things are very useable.

@Jetcopy and Farinatio - woohoo! Thanks to both of you! It sounds like it is possible to do what I want. I work mainly in Finale-land these days, but I do still go back to Logic Pro when the job requires it.

@Farinatio - you mentioned all of those different things that came with your MBP. Are these standard, or did you need to request them as additional things?

@Andrew: I got the MBP at the online Apple Store (for Education). Only there one can have these 'maximal' options built in. Normal resellers are not able to beef a MBP up that way...

Specs: Summary
15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display
2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
1TB PCIe-based Flash Storage
Intel Iris Pro Graphics + AMD Radeon R9 M370X with 2GB GDDR5 memory
Force Touch trackpad
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
Accessory Kit

Cheers,

Jan.
