Hi all,

I have a piece for Bb soprano sax and piano and I'm thinking of arranging it for Eb alto sax and piano.

I am trying to decide whether to keep the saxophone part the same and transpose the piano, or vice versa... Is there a traditional approach to doing this? What is that?!

If I keep the sax part the same, a sax player will benefit from having a choice because the sax family fingering is alike and most sax players play several types of sax.

If I transpose the sax part, the piano accompanists of the world may thank me for they would only have to learn one version.

Which way would you consider best? Wondering what opinions might be out there on the forum.

Cheers,

Hector Pascal.

Hi Hector

I'm not a composer, copyist or (really) a musician.

My opinion (for what it's worth), is to consider doing both transcriptions then produce/publish the one that sounds/works best.
If you're going to offend/discommode one or other of the musicians, choose the better sounding option and let the disappointed party cope as best they may (you could offer cake as a consolation)

Helpful? probably not. Just my two cents worth, though.

Cheers...

I'm a trumpet player- the typical arrangement for us is to leave the piano part alone and transpose the trumpet part.

...and if you just transpose the sax, take a good look at the result. You may have to check its range and maybe apply some octave corrections...
