There are several threads concerning Lilypond and a little about Denemo at notat.io

For example:

notat.io/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=54

Mac mini (OS 10.8.5) with dual monitors, Finale 2014d (Finale 2011 as a backup) with GPO 4
Kurzweil Mark 5 with M-Audio Midisport 2 x 2, Adobe InDesign CS4 SmartScore X Pro, JW Plug-ins

I asked "What do you guys think about Denemo (with Lilypond)?".

Good old Lilypond I know very well, but I as I wrote, I want to hear what people think exactly about Denemo. I read all the info etc. at their site and watched all the videos, but I don't know if it is worth trying, because time is money... ;-)

Are there on this forum active Denemo users, who could kindly share their experiences and thoughts?

Thank you. :-)

about lilypond, I noticed that the typical sources finale, maestro and petrucci are visually very cold and robotic.
Is there any way to use the lilypond font in finale?
Would not it be a good idea to integrate the visual idea of lilypond in finale?
would that be feasible?
Actually, are there more sources that can be used in finale?
He has always liked the visual appearance of old scores and now I see that it is possible, but not in finale..for the moment
thanks!

Abraham

Abraham2000, there are many commercial fonts that can be used in Finale. Here is a display of 1000 music fonts:

elbsound.studio/music_fonts.php

Perhaps you can find some with the warmer look that you want.

Emmentaler is the name of the Lilypond font. You will find it in the list of 1000 above and a link for obtaining it. I have no idea how if or how well it works in Finale.

MSTSmusic, if no one responds here, then I would suggest that you go to the site I mentioned, where there are several users of Lilypond you might contact for more information about Denemo, or who might put to you in contact with someone who uses Denemo.

I have experimented with lilypond. It is very interesting. I also have used two "graphical" interfaces to lilypond, Frescobaldi and Denemo, but must say that I do not have much experience with Denemo, more with Frescobaldi. Both seem to be nice GUI's to lilypond.

Good idea. Thank you. :-)

I would like to find exactly experienced Finale users who also have invested their time in Denemo. Some kind of "deep comparison" between Finale and Denemo is what I am interested in. That is why I started here.

But perhaps and hopefully there are such persons at notat.io/.

Hi,

I am also interested in Lilypond, Denemo, and Frescobaldi. Finale is actually an excellent app, but, as a long-time user who gained some overview over what has been going on with Finale through the years, I became inclined towards open source. My main concern with Finale is the chaotic pathway and planning of its parent company, whatever its current name or owner may be. I fear that economic concerns may result in solutions that some users will not like. The most obvious problem is the Finale's format. Now, it has supposedly been solved for the years to come, but we have heard it before...I, however, need to change a note or two before performances of work done in ten+ years old Finale. Then I often need to re-edit the whole file in a new version, as the things don't show where they have been left.

Back to Lilypond. I have heard that opening of old .ly files can also yield unpredictable results. That is not encouraging, but one can always find and install an old Linux app, and get the results needed.

I am still learning Denemo. The main argument for proceeding with Finale is proficiency. It would take me ages to get on my Finale level. One can, however, easily master the pre-formatting work. There are also a few features that Finale still cannot do - like "irrational" meters.

I would also be delighted to hear from users able to do a complex work from a to z in Denemo.

It would be nice if a few composers also were not able to do irrational time signatures
smilewinkgrin

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) using 2012 (2014 has been shelved for its lack of support for older Garritan libraries) under Windows 8.1
basically ALL Garritan libraries, plus XSample Chamber Ensemble.

Actually it is possible to do in Finale.
But it is definitely not something for “Finale beginners”.

By The Way:
Could you be more specific about what you mean by your words “irrational meters”?

Do you mean {fractional-numerator time signatures} - like e. g. 4½/4 ?

Do you mean {non-power-of-2-denominator time signatures} - like e. g. 7/6 ?

Do you mean {irrational time signatures} - like e. g. 2/(1 + √5) ?

Peter

Hi Peter, I agree - the definitions have unfortunately not been settled as of yet. What I mean is described @ E. Gould pp. 180-181 (would be your 2nd option).

We surely would all appreciate to see your solution in Finale. The one I use (hide TimeSig, use a fake one via Expressions) is not for beginners either, and also not particularly stable in terms of screen's/paper's geography.

Denemo/Lilypond can do it as a regular time sig (see example).

Here it is (see the attached document).

Properties:

1. The time signature looks tolerable,

2. The measure plays back correctly,

3. The notes within the measure are automatically spaced correctly.

I am not sure why you have the problem “not particularly stable in terms of screen's/paper's geography”.
Perhaps it is a matter of defining the custom expression category conveniently.

Peter
