I also have used two "graphical" interfaces to lilypond, Frescobaldi and Denemo, but must say that I do not have much experience with Denemo, more with Frescobaldi. Both seem to be nice GUI's to lilypond.

I am also interested in Lilypond, Denemo, and Frescobaldi. Finale is actually an excellent app, but, as a long-time user who gained some overview over what has been going on with Finale through the years, I became inclined towards open source. My main concern with Finale is the chaotic pathway and planning of its parent company, whatever its current name or owner may be. I fear that economic concerns may result in solutions that some users will not like. The most obvious problem is the Finale's format. Now, it has supposedly been solved for the years to come, but we have heard it before...I, however, need to change a note or two before performances of work done in ten+ years old Finale. Then I often need to re-edit the whole file in a new version, as the things don't show where they have been left.
Back to Lilypond. I have heard that opening of old .ly files can also yield unpredictable results. That is not encouraging, but one can always find and install an old Linux app, and get the results needed.
I am still learning Denemo. The main argument for proceeding with Finale is proficiency. It would take me ages to get on my Finale level. One can, however, easily master the pre-formatting work. There are also a few features that Finale still cannot do - like "irrational" meters.
I would also be delighted to hear from users able to do a complex work from a to z in Denemo.

MSTSmusic, if no one responds here, then I would suggest that you go to the site I mentioned, where there are several users of Lilypond you might contact for more information about Denemo, or who might put to you in contact with someone who uses Denemo. Good idea. Thank you.  I would like to find exactly experienced Finale users who also have invested their time in Denemo. Some kind of "deep comparison" between Finale and Denemo is what I am interested in. That is why I started here. But perhaps and hopefully there are such persons at notat.io/. | | Back to Top | |

We surely would all appreciate to see your solution in Finale. The one I use (hide TimeSig, use a fake one via Expressions) is not for beginners either, and also not particularly stable in terms of screen's/paper's geography.
Denemo/Lilypond can do it as a regular time sig (see example).

Here it is (see the attached document).
Properties:
1. The time signature looks tolerable,
2. The measure plays back correctly,
3. The notes within the measure are automatically spaced correctly.
I am not sure why you have the problem “not particularly stable in terms of screen's/paper's geography”.
Perhaps it is a matter of defining the custom expression category conveniently.
