I'm now writing an anthem for SATB choir and piano. When I try to enter notes, Finale forces me to put them where it think they should go,
not where I want them. I enter a note where I want it, and Finale squeezes it tightly with, say, a previous note. How do I can tell Finale to
leave the not alone, exactly where I put it, instead of moving left or right to squeeze it up against some other note? If you can, send your
advice via Email at barthewitt@verizon.net, as well as on the forum. I am frustrated and desperate. Bartonius here.

Make sure Automatic Music Spacing is ON (Finale Menu > Preferences > Edit).

When Auto Spacing is On, Finale will space the music in such a manner that you will probably be satisfied with the result. If not, there are ways to modify the spacing - different spacing libraries, manual repositioning, etc.

I'd suggest entering all of the music, text, lyrics, etc., then laying out the pages. Then, you'll see if any additional intervention is needed.

In addition to what N. has said, I would suggest that you work in scroll view, at least to enter the notes and lyrics. Save page view and tweaking the layout for last.

Also, you might want to remove your email address, to protect it from spammers.

Simple Entry, QWERTY keyboard, numberpad. That's my system, and I'm stickin' to it.

It would also be helpful to know what version of Finale the OP is using if he would be so kind as to put it in a signature file, which he can do by clicking the COntrol Panel button at the top of this thread and entering appropriate information (among other things) as he may see others have.

It sounds like you are trying to do something the wrong way -- i.e. not the optimal way for telling Finale what you want.

How are you entering notes? Simple Entry? Speedy Entry? Mouse click, or keyboard commands/MIDI keyboard? Generally, Finale does brilliantly at music spacing, so unless you are trying to produce unconventional avante garde notation, there's probably an easier way of achieving what you want.

Without seeing what you are doing, it's hard to know what the problem is. The only reason I can think of for Finale "squeezing" notes close to each other is if you've got too many measures locked within a system.

Also, doing the tutorials and watching the videos might give some helpful information about how Finale works.

Probably, the OP is coming from the Sibelius world, there you can put note in the middle of the empty measure to get it placed there. In Finale it is not possible. Maybe that is what the OP means?

Finale 2009c now (works better than 2011c) on OS X 10.6.8 and not thinking to upgrade any more until both computers die completely (iMac 21', MacBook Pro 13').
