This is very confusing for me when I write jazz band music; I will write an important part in the bass and when I listen back it sounds like a garbled mess just because the playback is messing up.

You said it is playing back an octave too low. The bass is supposed to sound an octave below what is written. This is not quite the same thing as "a garbled mess." I think it might be clearer if you post a sample of the file in question.

The bass is always notated an octave higher than it sounds.

Perhaps the OP should set his file to display in concert pitch at least until the matter has been solved.

(Also some Bass patches (mostly MIDI voices) build in the octave transposition even for notes written in concert pitch--in case the OP has stumbled onto one of those.)
