I am using Finale 2004b on my (slow) 400MHZ PBG3 in OS 9.2.

My problem is that when I open a file and start working on it, Finale unexpectedly locks up. It is doing it at different times, using different tools. When it locks up, I cannot hit Command-Opt-Esc to force a quit. The only thing I've been able to do is to reboot. I have turned off the auto save option in the preferences, but it still happened.

Virtual Memory is OFF. Everything else seems to be okay.

If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

As far as I remember about OS 9, it does like to have 1 MB of virtual memory, and I think if you click the "Default" button in the memory control panel, it will set it properly. I would also try increasing the memory alloted to Finale. Often, lock-ups, freezes and the like come from not having enough memory allocated. (Do this through the "Get Info" window - Command-I)

You're right,

It didn't crash after I turned on VM. However, it did give me erratic playback which was perfect before. mad Oh well... not your fault.

I'll have to talk to techsupport.

Thanks for the quick reply!

You should not need to use VM. However as Gary points out, Finale need far more memory allocated than the default. Maybe also your harddisk is getting full or/and the fragmentation is bad.

Chris and Seth, how much physical RAM does your Mac have? The system requirements recommend 256 MB.

Also, are you trying to use the SoftSynth for playback?

The erratic playback problem is likely a conflict between Quicktime and Virtual Memory. If you want to continue to use VM, either update to the latest version of QT for OS 9, or uninstall the version of QT you're using and use QT 4. (If you update to the latest version of QT, your playback should sound fine, but it may be slightly out of sync with the Finale's scrollbar.)

Plug-ins use up memory. Dragging the Plug-ins folder out of the Finale folder will also decrease the amount of memory Finale uses.

Your sluggish playback sounds like you're playing from VM which is erratic at best. Give Finale as much memory as you can, preferably mucho megs and it should be fine. I just tried it on OS 9.2.2 [ugh!] with 40 MB and its playing back fine with 48 chanels of MIDI stuff.
