Hello Brain Trust,

For some reason I can not get the text portion of a smart shape to display. I'm just trying to do a straight line with a "port." indication over it. The line shows fine, but with no text. I've created these in the past with no problem. Similarly, the precreated glissando smart shape doesn't show text either. Is there some setting that needs to be switched on/off somewhere? The manual has not been helpful thus far.

Thanks for your thoughts!

If the line is too short, the text won't show - it has to be a minimum length, whatever that may be.

You might have to use a plain line and add the text as an expression.

I thought of that (the length). This particular case is not problematic in that regard. I even stretched it out to a farther note with the same result.

If you post your file, someone will probably be able to diagnose the problem.

Create a default document, copy a measure with the smart shape from your document to the new one, and post that.

Okay, here's the specific problem in the file. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks again!

Looks like maybe you've picked the wrong smart shape. Control-click (or Mac equivalent) the bottom icon in the smart shape palette (in 2014 this looks like an asterisk in a hexagon), pick your "port" shape, then assign that. At least it works for me on Windows 2014. (I deleted your original line and reapplied as above.)

Hmmm…I guess I had to pick it using that particular button and not by changing it directly in the smart shape options box. But it works now, so big thanks! (Now I need to make a mental note of the pickiness for the future.)

Actually, what you chose to replace was the wiggly line glissando. Had you chosen that in the palette, the "port." line you created would have appeared. In the options box, you chose glissando. That's the wiggly line, not the straight line.

It's not real clear, but in that Smart Shape options box, you're just telling it what shape to give you when you click on a certain few of the palette buttons. Control-clicking on one of those palette buttons let's you set the shape for that button.

What I couldn't figure out how to do was to edit a shape via one already entered on the page. It seems like instead you need to control-click on one of the palette buttons and hunt for the shape by appearance in the list.

I've never played with the guitar bend shape before. Fun! You can change to line without an arrowhead or a dashed line. I guess the parameters controlling the curve are not configurable.
