When I send out new assignments the grade of my students lowers instantaneously sometimes drastically much to my students and parents chagrin. To be frank I have had parents come in and complain that their son/daughter had been practicing and had an A average and all of a sudden when they logged in the average jumped to a C or D because new assignments were posted before they had a chance to practice. It would be helpful and instructive to keep the grade as it is until the assignment is due or until the student submits the assignment in order to help teach time management skills with deadlines. Perhaps there can be an option that students can submit an assignment late but lose points depending on how late the assignment is submitted. I would be glad to hear other educators opinions regarding this.

Thanks,

Doug Denniston

Maybe I am missing something, but I have never had a student's grade lower because I made an assignment. Now they may have lower grade AFTER they submit the assignment, but not when I assign it.

Even if the students grades are lower, why aren't they retaking the assignments until they make a grade better than a "c" (for example). I always tell my students that smartmusic isn't perfect and doesn't always grade perfectly but I listen to the assignment and adjust accordingly. Last week I had a student played a C scale on flute with a b flat played each time and smartmusic counted it as a 100.freaked (she wasn't very in tune to start with) But I corrected the problem with her and now we are good to go.

I always check my students assignments. If the student is going to take the time to do the assignment, the least I can do is take time to listen to it. And I adjust accordingly...always.

On the parents side of things (which I am also), i explain that i want mastery over recall and anything above a 95 is considered mastery. If there is a problem, then i reassign with an emailed explanation if why. Once that happens, the grade goes back to where it started from.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are wanting.

Ok that makes sense to me. I know you can do progress reports in PDF in the class roster and to make it electronically signed would take some doing.

Just a thought to get you going, why not email the pdf to the student through outlook, thunderbird etc and have a return receipt sent to you. This way you know when someone has looked at it.

I like where you are going with this and you need to make a feature request so they can think about it at makmusic.

Thanks Jim. I appreciate your help and expertise. On an aside I was excited to hear that Florida and Texas are working with Smartmusic to integrate state standards and assess student performance in compliance with Race to The Top Funding requirements. In New York all teachers must track and provide evidence that students are learning and meeting state-wide music curriculum standards by January 2013. I wish New York was on board with Smartmusic as well. However in the interim I plan on utilizing Smartmusic's progress reports and the Smartmsuic portfolio to track and document student achievement. I wish I could be a fly on the wall to hear how the developers of the Smartmsuic technology are going to come up with a new platform that incorporates Florida and Texas state standards. In any event thanks again for your help.
