I am writing a score with lyrics and am trying to position the dynamics at the top so they don't clash with the lyrics. How would one do this in Finale 2014.5? I understand there is a plugin to move all dynamics, but I want them to be positioned at the top as and when I add them rather than having to add them at the bottom and then run the plugin every time to move (or move them manually). I'd appreciate your help.

There's a library called Choral Dynamics. That has a category just for the dynamics that are placed above the staff. Load that library and you're good to go.

I just use the Selection to drag the mp, f, or hairpin above the lyric or staff. Maybe I don't understand the question.

Djard, that's not the way to do it. It's a little like pounding a nail in with a screwdriver. Sure, it's possible to drag expressions where you want them, but it's better to use an expression category that does this automatically.

Well, I'll be.... I've been creating my own for goodness knows how long and never realized such a library already existed. I'll have to poke around the Finale Libraries folder more to see what else is there.

Thanks a lot, exactly what I wanted. FYI for other Finale newcomers like me from what I also learned: the positioning of a dynamic is a property that you can change (open the dynamic property and it's in the positioning tab), and this library supplies a duplicate set for us with the positioning set to the top.

Or just change the position of Dynamics in the Category Designer.

That makes most sense if you are doing unaccompanied choral music.

Yes: if you're doing music with voices and instruments, then duplicate the Dynamics category and position each accordingly, using "above" for vocal staves and "below" for instruments.

The only thing is, if you want to use metatools, you'll have to reassign the ones you use, or the default ones, to the new dynamics. Changing the existing category won't need that step. It just depends on the need.

I find programming the keys underneath the standard ones for the alternate set an easy thing to remember (e.g., if 5 is mf, use T for the alternate mf, 6 and Y, 7 and U, etc.).

it would be a nice feature if Finale recognized a staff as a "vocal staff" and automatically placed these items above the staff by default.

it could be in staff properties, in case someone might NOT want this behaviour it could easily be turned on or off on a staff by staff basis.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) using 2012 (2014 has been shelved for its lack of support for older Garritan libraries), putting Finale 25 through its paces.
Windows 8.1
basically ALL Garritan libraries, plus XSample Chamber Ensemble.

Just checked a notation program I recently purchased, and it does just that. I have to say, though, that setting a separate expressions category for vocal lines in Finale is not that difficult.
