Following on from this thread forum.makemusic.com/default.aspx?m=444209&f=6&p=1#m444251 I'm wondering if anyone knows why Automatic Update Layout and Automatic Music Spacing are Programme Preferences rather than Document Options. Is there a benefit in having these as preferences or is it just something that has happened?

I think some of us might find life a little easier if these settings belonged to the document - but maybe that would not suit others?

The other related question is whether or not people might think it useful if there were further settings, easy to override when wanted (modifier key &c), whereby one might prevent AUL & AMS from affecting sections of the score before the current page or screenview every time one did something that brought them into effect (such as described in the linked thread)?

I seem to recall that many Finale versions ago (2001-2003), Automatic Update and Spacing were menu items. That would make them document specific(?)

Anyone else recall this, or am I in error?

I'm not sure what you mean by menu item implying document specific.

I think of them like "display active layer only" or "page view style" -- a state the program is in. I'm not sure they're "options" of any kind, though maybe the state gets saved when you save program preferences.

Since I turn them on and off at least once in every piece, I would find it convenient if they were in a document menu,or even on a palette, like the other commands Motet mentions.

I think of the program options as something to set and forget.

I guess they do get set according to a program option (unlike which tool you're in, which survives a restart of Finale).

In 2011 there's something called the Layout Toolbar, which has Show Rulers, Update Layout, Automatic Update Layout, Automatic Music Spacing, and Show Grid. Does that still exist in 2014?

If, after pressing Automatic Update Layout, say, you then pick "Save Preferences" from the File menu, they're saved.

But I can see wanting them per-document. I leave Automatic Update Layout off while I'm entering music in Scroll View, then turn it on for page layout.

The Layout Palette is back in Finale 2014d, but probably only in the Windows version.

Zuill

P.S.: There's no need to turn these on and off. If you don't want them always on, just turn them off and manually space and update layout.

There have been persistent calls for AUL and AMS to be document-specific options for many years.

Personally, it makes sense to me for any modern notation layout program to respond instantly to any changes and update the document accordingly. The days of having to press a button to see what's going on are long gone. The problem with Finale is that sometimes updating changes things you don't want changed. The whole business of "Incorporate Music Spacing" not incorporating changes needs to be sorted out, so that a user can make changes that the program won't undo, until you tell the program specifically to overwrite your changes.

Just as a side note here: If Finale quits on you, whatever you have checked may become unchecked the next time you open Finale. This has been a bug for as long as I can remember. You may have to go back in and make sure your boxes are checked or the music will not update as expected.

I prefer the program setting, but can see how other might like file specific options.

I would leave Automatic Update Layout on, Wiggy, were it not for the unacceptable slowdown. It also doesn't make sense that it should impact music entry in Scroll View, but it does. Better would be to update the layout only when you switch to Page View.

Except in my case where I'm reluctantly turning it off for music entry. I want it always off until a certain stage of production, then I want it always on rather than having to push a button every time.
