I've used it some for my beginning guitar students. Several of the important technologies that make SmartMusic what it is are currently only consistently accurate for monophonic instruments. So while brass, woodwinds, strings, and voice work very well with SmartMusic since they (generally) only play a single note at a time, something like guitar which often plays chords does not work as well for assessment or intelligent accompaniment.

With my students I've used Finale to create SmartMusic accompaniments for them so that they could have something to play along with. But we didn't use it for grading them or following them.

If someone has a MIDI guitar interface, that might work better with SmartMusic. SmartMusic does allow a player to use a MIDI keyboard for assessment, but not for Intelligent Accompaniment.
