Has anybody come across any that make the piano and rythmn section sounds any more realistic. I love the program, i just wish i could improve the sounds in it. If there are any good free ones out there please post. Thanks | Back to Top

Yes I am a jazz trumpet player, and i still prefer the sound of Aebersold cd's over smartmusic's accompanient. In Smart Music, the voicings dont change often, and the drum fills are really cheesy. I do think this can be solved with a new synth set. The program won't change voicings and phrasing, but it will change the color that comes out. I've tried the cd recording option, and i've liked the legit stuff better than the jazz. Just sounds "artificial". | Back to Top

Smart Music is a practice tool, and a mighty fine one at that. What I was speaking of was changing the sound driver of smart music to another that is more developed. I currently have the primary sound driver and SigmaTel Audio, and i use SigmaTel Audio. What I was wondering before was if there were other sound drivers that had more realistic sounds for the piano and rhythm section, or if anybody has had success with this. I don't want to modify SmartMusic's actual sound font, just change the driver, which you can do at the setup screen when you start the program every time.
Also, RAWBRASS, you have your bell bent upwards like Dizzy's horn? How much did that cost ya? | Back to Top

With MIDI drivers, changing to a different one will change the sounds that are being used. But SmartMusic isn't actually using your soundcard's MIDI drivers and instead is using the wave driver. So SmartMusic is not using sounds that exist as a part of your soundcard drivers or hardware. It's always using its own soundfont. This was necessary, because any other solution would have meant sending MIDI data to the soundcard driver, and this would have made it very simple to record the MIDI data and turn it into notation - something publishers would be strongly against. Using SM's own sounds was also important to MakeMusic because of balance issues.
Selecting different audio drivers in the SmartMusic setup doesn't change the sounds that are used. It just changes where the soundfont/softsynth playback is sent to. Windows XP, all updates
