Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that many of the regulars on this forum have grown silent lately?

Also, it seem there fewer discussions regarding Finale tips and tricks and more about Print Music and Notepad (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Just curious . . .

There aren't many technical discussion where I feel I can actively contribute, apart from a few old FAQs. Besides, I don't use 2002 or 2003, so most of the "new stuff" makes little sense to me.

However, the occasional interesting post, the overall civil atmosphere and the appreciated snappy humour are enough for me to keep on lurking :-)

There is not much to talk about anymore. Seems like a lot of us are still using 2002 so we know all the bugs/problems. It also seems that while 2003 did not fix any bugs/problems it has the same ones as 2002 so nothing to talk about there either. It seems logical that 2003 doesn't have any new bugs as the only major change is the cosmetic layout of the document options and I think my dog could have programmed that.

Oops, I forgot about the rhyming dictionary, what a cool little feature. Word on the street is that 2004 will have a meal planning plugin that orders your food at regular intervals and has it delivered.

Here's a story that might hopefully make sense:

Back in the Finale 98 days, myself/Tobias/Robert/Philip had some wishes regarding enhancements to the PDK to be able to develop plug-ins with more power and functionality. We had some internal e-mail discussions about this with Randy (programmer at Coda), and he investigated the possibilities with the management. Finale 2000 came, no actual enhancements were made to the PDK (although there were some very minor adjustments of how Finale handled plug-ins, but that was mainly to provide more stability to Finale itself).

The discussions intensified for Finale 2001, but again no enhancements.

When Finale 2002 was planned, the plug-in community was more organized with the finpdk group. This time we even arranged our own voting procedure to prioritize the requests. Some plug-in developers even asked their user base to send in requests about PDK enhancements (since strictly speaking, 10 plug-in developer's votes would never count against the numerous "real user" requests). Still no PDK enhancements in Finale 2002.

When Finale 2003 was planned, the finpdk community prepared a very detailed list describing the enhancements we wanted (based on something like 1,000 mails between plug-in developers).
And eventually with Finale 2003, Coda allocated development resources to do enhancements to the PDK functionality. We still got just a small fraction of what we've asked for, but a _giant_ step forward compared to the old PDK. And the PDK itself got a more flexible design, which would provide for easier additions in the future. However, I _know_ that the PDK enhancements was _not_ free, in terms of development time and QA time. And those hours had to be taken from adding/fixing other features...

Discussing the PDK is a bit difficult due to its technical nature: To most Finale users, discussions about getting an FX_SetCurrentEnigmaDocument() API would make absolutely no sense. But to get a plug-in that - for example - can automatically update the parts with the changes made in the score, wouldn't it? Plug-ins built for Finale 2003 can provide that, and functionality in many other areas where plug-ins designed for previous Finale versions could not work. Currently, there are a couple of plug-ins (or parts of plug-ins) that only work on Finale 2003 and above, and the number of such plug-ins will increase.

I think I speak for the whole plug-in community, when I say that I'm very glad that Coda finaly brought some attention to the Finale PDK with Finale 2003.

And I think I'm not the only plug-in developer who would misread statements like the one from Anymous above - or about dogs that can program the only new addition to Finale - like something completely different.

Danny,

If you check out the S******* forum, where the techies get the Thought Police on to you even if you so much as think something off-topic, you'll find that it's a much more enjoyable place to be right here. I find the balance of helpful information to entertaining/humourous chit-chat is perfect. This forum isn't about people saying "I know how to do this", or "I'm better than you" - it's about people asking for help on a particular matter regarding Finale usage (or something that vaguely resembles that at times). Do you ever see a post unanswered? (Unless, of course, it's a ridiculously stupid post?) :)
If a lot of people don't need help at the moment, then why offer it? Maybe users are starting to look up the answers themselves (both here, and by RTFM) - we only hope!
