Is it possible to customize the appearance and performance of smart shapes? I'd like to put a little "o" at the beginning of each crescendo, and I'd like the crescendo to start with silence instead of the current dynamic level.

I don't believe there's a way to add an "o" at the beginning of a hairpin smart shape.

You could however create an "o" as a text expression dynamic marking. Give it a playback value of 0, enter it, then add a normal hairpin after it.

I tried an expression with "0" Velocity, and HP seemed to ignore it. However, "1" worked. That might be as close as you're going to get. The way I figure it, there has to be some sound in order to crescendo, but that might be just me.

JetCopy -- Good idea. How do you create a hairpin in the Expression Designer? What font and what character?

Zuill -- Not clear exactly what you did...did you use an expression instead of a Smart Shape? Did you edit the cresc. expression? If so, what were the playback settings for Type, Value, and Execute shape?

I did what Jetcopy suggested. I put a regular Smart Shape hairpin. I then created a text expression with the o character, and set the playback to Velocity, with a value of 1. So, it takes 2 separate tools and 2 separate items.

Ah, I get it; thanks. That works for the start of the note, but it doesn't get as loud as I want at the end of the crescendo.

Also, I want to be able to fade out, too. In the simple case, I have a whole note that starts with silence, grows to, say, mf, then fades back to silence. I've tried several different combinations. I can get the fade-in and fade-out, but I can't get the middle of the note loud enough. You can barely hear it. Any ideas how to do this?

You will also need to put an expression in the middle if the 2 hairpins to set the mid value. That can also be hidden. Then put the hidden expression at the end to return to nil.

If you need absolute control of the cresc/dim, this can be better accomplished with the MIDI Tool.

P.S.: If we knew what version you're using, we could maybe create a demo for you.

Except with the MIDI tool you have to turn off human playback to make it work. I was able to get it to sound like I want with human playback turned on. If I put the < and > hairpins underneath a whole note, then it decrescendos too rapidly. But if I have 8 eighth notes tied together, the decrescendo doesn't die out too soon. Of course, this does not LOOK like I want it to look, but I can have separate staves, some for looking and some for playing, and hide or show them, or mute or play them, depending on whether I'm printing or recording.

Thanks for the various ideas to try.

Actually, you can have MIDI data and HP. The HP preferences must be set to Incorporate for the item you want to use. There are 4 items in the preferences. I'll make a demo if you let me know for which version of Finale.

That might be useful to know; thanks. I'm using 2012c.r13.

Here's a rough demo. If this is not what you are looking for, sorry.

Thanks, I'll have a look. May be a few days before I can get back into the realm of musical pursuits, though. Work, work work!
