A friend of mine is maxed out on his SSD. He wants to move Finale to his external HD. Should he go through the install process onto the external, or can he just move certain files (and if so, which ones?)

How about moving a lot of non-Finale stuff from the computer drive to the external and keeping the Finale install intact? That's what I would do.

N's suggestion is best, but if you absolutely have to, I'd reinstall and specify the alternate HD location.  It would be a hit and miss operation to just copy or move to the new location.  You would never know if you got them all.  After reinstalling, you could rename the original top level directory and see if Finale works.  If everything works OK in the new location, then delete the old directories one at a time.  Maybe tech support could give a list of directories/files that would need to be relocated, but I would not hold my breath.

I've tired moving, and it NEVER works. I always uninstall from the OS hard drive and install on an external, or secondary, drive. It even works for SD cards if your friend is going to install on, say, a Surface. Just remember that certain files MUST be located on the OS drive in Finale 2012 and higher.

Thank you all. I think he's going to go with N.'s suggestion and prune a lot from his SSD, so there is more room for Finale.
