What font do you prefer to use?

As finale's default music font I fancy 'Petrucci' still more than 'Meastro.' Especially the clefs and the flags are nicer with petrucci.
For the lyrics I currently use "palatino linotype" as it is much clearer then 'times new roman'.

Originally, I used Sonata as my music font, but switched to Maestro in Finale 2003 because of the font annotation issue.

I've tried various text fonts, but my current favourite is Benguiat Gothic, because it is very clean and legible, and also attractive, giving my scores and parts a distinctive look and feel.

I like Sonata, too. I even went so far as to buy it, and a couple of forum members were kind enough to set up templates for me, since I couldn't do it in Print Music. Unfortunately, the stock Sonata font doesn't contain a vocal tenor clef, and the great majority of my work requires one. So, since I have neither the programs or the skills to make the clef and make it work, it's back to Maestro for me!

For a long time I just used Maestro for music and Times New Roman for text. It looks perfectly fine, but I've recently gotten tired of my music looking exactly like everyone else's, so I'm putting a little effort into finding a more unique look.

I've recently published some choral octavos using Engraver for notation and Georgia for text. It looks nice.

I'm a big fan of the AshMusic font for jazz/commercial writing. It's a nice clean looking, handwritten style font. I believe Kendor uses it for some of their charts. I find it much better looking than the Finale Jazz Font, which I've grown to dislike, especially the JazzText font. Ugly! One thing though, the time signatures and clefs are kind of small initially, so you'll want to bump them up a bit. Otherwise, great font!

I use Maestro for my other works.

Anyone know about the xinfonia font? Some musicians say that it looks quite professional.

David

I've tried to access it, but www.xemo.org seems to be down or gone.
Since it is open-source, it should be freely distributable.
It is said to approximate a Henle look, but I'd want to see that!
I can't find an example that I am aware is Xinfonia..anyone?
idea
So...anyone got it???

I use Engraver, but have the noteheads set at 22pt to get rid of the 'chunky' or 'fat' look. I prefer the look of this font for items particular like clefs and accidentals.

Jazz, that comes with Finale. I wish the numbers were a bit clearer at 8pt. I had to switch to Arial for those. Also, I had to keep the chord symbols just a bit larger than I wanted, for clarity.

about in version 2003, Finale began expecting its music fonts to be coupled with a matching "Font Annotation" file, which, so far as I can tell, describes a bounding box around each character to help Engraver Slurs and other items avoid collisions with notes, etc.

Because Sonata is an Adobe font, not a Coda one, it does not come with the necessary annotation file, and Finale complains (gently) when you try to use it.

Rather than waste time trying to create my own annotation file, I decided to go with the flow and switch to Maestro. I've since learned that there is at least one third-party annotation file for Sonata, but I've already got many dozens of scores using Maestro, and don't want to switch back.

I use the Jazz font, except for chord symbols. I base chord symbols on the ComicSans font that is, I believe, a standard Microsoft font that comes with their operating systems.

I guess a rectangle is "close enough".  But font characters are not necessarily rectangular.

Remember, you can download font annotation files from Jari Williamsson's website.  There is a font annotation file there for Sonata.   http://www.finaletips.nu/downloads.php

Thanks, David - I'd already alluded to that in my posting ("I've since learned that there is at least one third-party annotation file for Sonata"), but I now have a significant amount of work set in Maestro, and don't really fancy "going back". Another issue is that Sonata does not contain all the glyphs Finale expects (eg, certain clef variations).

I've switched to using Georgia for text. I never did like the "chunky" look of engraver (that Tim mentioned), but thanks to Tim's post I'll have another look at it.
