I thought I would compile a list of music notation programs that run natively in OS X!

Sibelius 3       http:// www.sibelius.com

Encore              http://www.gvox.com

Lime Music        http://www.cerlsoundgroup.org/cgi-bin/Lime/Mac.html

NoteAbility Pro   http://debussy.music.ubc.ca/~opus1/

Nightingale        http://www.ngale.com/index_02.html (OK, so they only "anounced" an OS X version)

(The following programs are aimed at the audio editing crowd, but they will do notation:)

Intuem              http://www.intuem.com/

Logic 6              http://www.emagic.de/home/news/index.php?lang=EN

Cubase              http://www.steinberg.net/en/index.php

Please add any applications that have been left off the list

(If the replies below don't make since It's because I edited this message)
Sibelius; SIBELIUS; sibelius; There, Thats as much as I like smilewinkgrin

I believe Digital Performer handles basic notation in OSX too.

About the filtering of the word S******* (S i b e l i u s) on this board:

What's up with that? Up till now I thought it was just a childish ploy, but yesterday I needed to do a search to see if any current version of F***** is able to open S i b e l i u s files (S******* can open Finale files). Of course, I could not search for it, and I did not find the answer I needed.

I got to thinking about this, and the more I dwell on it, the more it makes me mad. What kind of company pulls this kind of crap? Who in the company is so immature as to make this kind of policy decision? Don't they realize how it makes them look?

It's not like the word S i b e l i u s is intellectual property, for heaven's sake.

Speaking as the person who first initiated the compulsary use of S******* devil , if you actually change your search parameters to more than a month (try the past year for this forum), you will find postings containing that word from ages ago. Also, if you actually consider the platform call Windows, you'll find many more posts in that forum, even in the last month, contained the Verboden Vord!

Cheers,

I figure the reason they put asterisks every time you type the word S i b e l i u s is because they figure you'll forget about S i b e l i u s if you can't see the word. (Yeah, that'll work)

Hello All,
blush
It is entirely my fault that the word Sibelius was being censored to S*******. After seeing a number of users doing this voluntarily on the old forums, I thought it would be amusing to have it done automatically on the new forums. It is now obvious that there was a lapse in good judgment on my part. Please accept my apologies, and feel free to use the word "Sibelius" as much as you like.

You can't read Sibelius files directly in Finale because Sibelius, unlike Finale, does not publish their file format. But you can use our Dolet for Sibelius plug-in to save a MusicXML file from Sibelius 2.1, and then use our Dolet for Finale plug-in to read the MusicXML file into Finale.

Dolet for Sibelius runs on both Mac and Windows. Unfortunately Dolet for Finale currently runs on Windows only. We are porting to OS X and will be ready to start beta testing when Finale 2004 ships. In the meantime, we have file translation services available.

There's more information about all of this at:

I'm not a Mac user but I heard that over on this side Sibelius was no longer a four letter word. Actually, I don't know what the uproar is about. Finlandia is one of my favorite compositions by the Finnish master. By the way, you may be fortunate that you don't have 2004 yet. We with PC's are still in the Beta testing phase. By the way, check out the Sibelius Forum. It's not all rosy there either.

I looked at the forums as you suggested and am struck by the fact that OS X users are getting quick responses to questions from some guy named Daniel who works for S*******. There is even a response from one of the owners of the company.

Also, everyone is on the same board. No Mac/Win split.

Unless I am mistaken, not all of the correspondence from their tech support is much more congenial than from Make Music, which I agree rarely responds on the forums, except to chide us about using the forum to get to tech support. But tell me. I've looked at the demo of Sibelius 3, and I would only take them seriously if they had a tool as great as speedy entry. They don't. For my money, despite its faults, that's where Finale has it hands down.

I've read through the Sibelius forums, and don't find that their tech support people (or company owners, FTM) are as terse as you imply, Zuill. Nor do I find that their "issues" are anywhere as serious as those facing Finale users now (at least on the Mac side).

All applications have bugs. All applications have limitations that will annoy varying amounts of users. I don't know how Sibelius stacks up to Finale in this way, as I have yet to really dive deep into that software.

The issues facing Mac users are much more serious than mere "bugs". For those of us who use notation software in our professions (not as a toy), we are forced to choose between what is avaiblable. At this point, Finale is 3 years behind the new operating system that most of us use every day. In my case, I cannot use MIDI input w/Finale on my Powerbook G4 without a seriously convoluted gear setup, which make the whole "portable" idea moot. Every other application that I use in my profession has migrated to OS X (Logic Audio, Pro Tools, Reason, FCP, Photoshop, Illustrator. . .to name a few), and most of them are already on second generation releases.

A bug is an inconvenience of varrying degrees. An application which prevents the user from keeping up with the current OS, is a serious problem. While Sibelius may not be as feature-rich as Finale, it has one feature that overrides them all: it will run on the current OS. This is the single greatest issue facing Mac users today, and I fear it will be the downfall of Finale on the Mac.

Besides, Sibelius is going to take advantage of this mess next week with a really attractive cross-grade offer next week.

I will stand corrected on the issue of responses to the Sibelius forum by their tech support. After looking further, they are quick and helpful. That is definitely a plus for them.

As to availability of decent programs for certain operating systems, that is a mater of personal choice, and I appreciate each persons needs. I have been around long enough to remember having to do it all by hand, and I still teach my students the necessity of learning hand notation. Some of us have been so used to the technology that we have allowed ourselves no breathing room in the event of a power failure or worse.

I applaud your desire to be running at maximum efficiency for yourself and your clients. The best to you in your decision as to your next notation program. As for me, I will wait until the dust settles.

What exactly do you find so great / superior about it?
IMHO the dreaded S**** application offers you more or less the same possiblities, only that you are not limited to just the capabilities of one particular tool at a time (e.g. when entering music).

To elaborate a little more: please know that I have been a staunch Finale user since the days of Finale 3.5 (boy, all that blood, sweat and tears to learn the program .... what an investment of time and goodwill!)
I refused to buy the ridiculous 2003 upgrade.
I have abandoned Finale almost entirely now, except for the times I need to print out an old score in Classic (and man, I DO HATE IT: having to launch Classic just to do that! ...) which would need too much tweakin' to make it look exactly like it did before in Finale.

I am not exactly unhappy about the other Program's capabilities, perhaps just having to give up old routines and shortcuts bothers a little.
With the advent of Panther I'm planning to abondon any OS 9 software I was using at all (which is to say: just FINALE) and since CODA / MM are not getting their act together it seems like they lost me (not only Herbie Hankock ....)
