It has two advantages for me: One, it produces an MP3 file that is only about 2/3 the size of a normal one, and with no obvious degradation of the sound. And two, if file size is critical and sound quality is less so, it gives you the ability to adjust parameters all the way down to 24kBit, 32,000Hz, Mono, to produce even smaller MP3 files.
For example, a recent chart was 33,718kb Wav. The high quality MP3 is 1,913kb.
(Currently using: Finale 2003a, Windows 98-2e, TGTools 2.25, and The Glenlivet when I can afford it.)
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

Save Special
Save as audio file
click the radio button "compressed wav file"
Click "advanced" and set your desired compression (MEG layer 3)
...and don't forget to change the ending of the filename to mp3...
Works a treat - 22 1/2 minutes of Rhapsody in Blue - wav = 250 odd MB or mp3 = 9 MB

Ron B. said...You're kidding? This I've got to try out. Why would MakeMusic keep it a secret that you can make .MP3 files directly from Finale? There's gotta be a catch, right?
Because not everyone has an audio codec on their machine to create MP3 files. MakeMusic would have to include a codec if they wanted to trumpet this as a feature. Codecs are very, very expensive to licence and MM would have to pass the costs on to us.
Download iTunes. It's free. You can load your wav into it and covert it to either AAC or MP3. Download it at www.apple.com/itunes.
Audio codec? 'scuse the ignorance, I don't think I knowingly have one of those, but I do know that there is no unlicensed software on my PC, so one of my standard and legit programs must have one - is this likely? Could it be part of the windows media player?
Whatever, I have had no problem with the Finale MPEG layer 3 format, although I confess I haven't played the MP3 results away from my PC... and the sound through media player does sound a tad richer than even through finale's playback.
Good luck Ron, and enjoy.
And for those who'd care to test my humble effort - I am attaching about 55 seconds worth of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" as converted to MP3 by Finale. Oh!.... Sorry, the upload manager just refused to accept an MPEG format "Not allowed"
Ah well

I ended up having one incuded with my Nero package, i just forgot about it, but it worked awsome, its the one that comes with nero ultra edition, just called Nero wave editor
im gonna try to export staight out of finale though thanks for the tip
chrisbris - why not upload it to the showcase? i awalys love to hear what poeples works sound like :D
i was always more of a hobbiest composer myself, and have been workin on this game as art lead, but i decided to try and write some music for it, and the guys upstairs liked it so they want me to make all the songs now for the game lol, no clue if i can, i seem to get inspiration in spirts when it comes to music, but maybe having deadlines will help
you can listen to one of the songs at http://www.anotherhell.com if you care too :D | Back to Top | |

As for codecs, they are very important since without them you wouldn't be able to convert to anything. The codec is the language trough which a .WAV file is read and transformed into data type, which is why the mp3 files are so small, since they don't depend that much on the length of the music but on how clearly it reads it or not. MP3 is not a windows feature. Windows doesen't have a license for that, that's why Windows Media Player compresses in it's own format .WMA (windows media audio). But if you have installes a creative card and software, Winamp, Nero, or some audio editing software, you have the codec installed.
So Make Music can't say that Finale can convert files to MP3 since it does not include the codec. Even though most likely there is no computer in the world without mp3 codec, they don't want to pay for licensing. An just in case a person doesen't have the codec, he won't be calling tech support to say that the program doesen't work. ©1999 - 2004 E tot ce va spun!
