Hi there,

Is that possible to publish the score online so people can listen, read, or print the music? like the Sibelius Scorch.

From what I understand, if you are an important and rich customer, it is possible.

This URL, http://www.makemusic.com/publishing/viewer.aspx describes this newly updated viewer.

This link, http://www.makemusic.com/documents/FinaleViewerSpecSheet.pdf, provides a PDF version of features

Unfortunately, unlike Scorch, it does not seem to be available to the average user, and it seems to be very expensive.

You can use the Finale Showcase pretty much like the Scorch option for Sibelius.

I self-publish on my site. The issue as Jason says is protecting your property. You need to be a real techie. All I do is put mp3s on my site and then offer to sent a PDF file of score and parts using Paypal or include the URL for the publisher where there is one. It's not nearly as good as showing the notation (at least a sample). So far I've been too lazy to set up sample PDF files. Besides my published stuff through Brassworks4 and others is doing well so I'm not anxious. Take a look and see if it gives som ideas.

eyes And what is the Finale Viewer that you may download for free from http://www.codamusic.com/viewer/ ?
Is the 'viewer' that Jason talk about it the same that this one?
I guess not, isn't it?

I should be able to post finale files on my website so my students can open them using Notepad, correct? I've been trying to link to a .mus file on my webpage and I can't get it to work. Has anyone else had this sort of problem? At first I thought it may have been a naming problem with the link but I've relinked it a bunch of times and I'm almost 100% sure that I'm doing it right because all of my other files work. Any ideas?

That's strange, because MM's website also says:

MakeMusic said...
Customers can view those files when they download the free Finale Viewer

From whence, exactly, can "customers" download this "free" viewer?

I think I remember from a previous thread that the Viewer was no longer offered, and had been replaced with NotePad.

Mike, I remember reading that too, although there is still some mention of the viewer on the MakeMusic website.

All very confusing!

EAM: that is the same viewer I am referring to...

The problem is not that the viewer isn't available, it is that the only way to create files that can be viewed with it seems to be by being a rich and important publisher.
While the viewer is free and available, it can't just view any file easily... as I understand it the publisher must enter into a contract with Makemusic to have access to the tools required to create files that can be viewed in the viewer.

The viewer link is available, and posted in EAM's post half way up...

here it is, for convenience... http://www.codamusic.com/viewer/
It has a copyright of 2006, so I would expect it is either compatible with finale 2005 or 2006 files.

it can be used, for example, at www.bandmusicdirect.com

If you install it, you MUST reboot your computer before using it...

I believe what happened is they discontinued the 'old' viewer, and created a new one, this one being not openly usable by content creators.

For those who would like to know.  I just called tech support about this and the cost to have this feature that Sibelius offers as part of the purchase is $5,000,00 if you want it from Finale.  Yes $5,000.00!   I can have the ability to do this for $199 if I switch to Sibelius.  If I had known this prior to upgrading to Finale 2008 I would have switched to Sibelius without a second thought.  The online publishing feature of Sibelius is the one thing that make me wish I had chose it over Finale.  For all that is great about Finale, the fact that it cares more for its rich customers than the ones who made them rich has painted a negative picture of MakeMusic for me will never be erased.  I have defended Finale each and everytime some said something negatve about the product.  I still love the product, but have lost all respect for the people running the orginazition.  This is a form of discrimination.

$5000! outrageous!

Honestly, if I knew I wouldn't choose Finale. But is it too late?

this topic has already been quite clearly expored by a MM representative.

the $5k price tag is for a commercial-use only product that is aimed at publishers.

could we put an end to these endless tirades now?

Yes, go use Sibelius instead.

Why are some people so touchy about defending short-sighted decisions by MakeMusic? Why do they react as if messages declaring these shortcomings are somehow attacking them personally? Telling people to go and use Sibelius, or LilyPond, or whatever, is a puerile response which does not change the fact that Finale users are deprived of a direct means to promote their own music on the web.

And that, after all, is what the original poster of this thread wanted to find out about.

Absolutely, Brian's right. MM should be giving us internet publishing capabilities, our own web-sites and unlimited free space on their server for us to conduct business. We don't need Finale to handle our notation needs, it should become a tool for internet commerce.

Yes, and what about those who do not use internet commerce? MM should provide paper, and ink, and toner, and shipping supplies, and postage. And it should all be free. FREE I SAY!!!

JT (heavy sarcasm)

Why do you suppose I am suggesting free web space? Or that Finale won't be used to create notation? Surely the simple question posted at the top of this thread was asking about being able to use the web for self-publication, right?

Perhaps you think being able to post one's own work on one's own website is a privilege that should be limited to the elite few who want to get into bed with MakeMusic, make expensive ($5000 or more) "deals", and thus ensure self-exposure.

If Adobe insisted you paid them $5000 to display GIF and JPG files modified in Photoshop on your website, and or charged $5000 to anyone who fancied publishing PDF files, they'd end up as small a company as MakeMusic in no time.

This little-town, jingoistic attitude just baffles me: you write music, and yet you defend barriers that prevent you distributing it on the only publishing medium with any real future?

Weird.

Luckily, Adobe gives us a less-than-$5000 way of getting some of our stuff out. Good old Acrobat. Good old Photoshop. And Adobe will continue to prosper long into the future.

Brian
