On a bad night, with good wine, I finished my proof-reading . . .
Of course later on I found entire sections, 16 bars or so here and there, left out and would like to insert them without disturbing the formatting and text.
This doesn't seem possible.
How 'bout if I re-enter all the material on a new file, continue merrily along until the material lines up with a specific page in the original file, PDF 'em, then cut out the extraneous pages in the PDF programme until the pages sync?

I would think the page numbering would have to be carefully considered.

Is this possible?

Thanks,
nick

Why to re enter?
Just Insert Measure.

The only thing i can think about the keeping the formatting is to resize the systems.

Nick, you are taking a simple job and making a complicated mess of it. Do as Octo says and forget about all this cutting and pasting involving pdfs and the like. You're worried about formatting. For heaven's sake, that takes seconds to correct after you've inserted your measures, rather than the hours the method you are proposing could take.

I'm afraid I've had this a couple of times and it's really annoying if you need to insert a number of measures and you'd already spent a lot of time formatting, including hiding staves, inserting page breaks, making measure number regions, adjusting lyric baselines, etc. Inserting measures can be best done by inserting systems (in the Page Tool) with the necessary number of measures in each system. This usually preserves the staff hiding after that point, but unfortunately, it messes up measure spacing, staff spacing adjustments, lyric baseline adjustments and a number of other things. It would be nice to be able to insert measures without altering the formatting of what comes afterwards, but Finale attaches a lot of information to specific system numbers (especially the first measure in each system) and this doesn't shift when inserting music.

May I ask: why are people taking so much time formatting their scores before they are finished adding the music? Isn't formatting something to be done after all the music has been entered and proof-read several times? I guess I have a different work-flow.

Instead of inserting measures, insert staff systems (use the Page Layout Tool).

In that way the following systems will retain their system margins, and you will not have to redo the margins for all the systems after the insertion.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I digitally engrave string methods, some one to two hundred years old, with 200 pages (sometimes) of text, diagrams, and non-standard notational elements. I find it easier to approach this by going cover to cover so the formatting can be more easily determined. Some of the original works that I use as source material are 10 x 12 inches and I try to format them on letter size paper. That's the reason (if reason it be) for my approach.

I will give the staff systems a try over my work around.

All best,
Nick

With such a large project, doing it in smaller units and combining the pdf's might be a better approach.

Come on, Ron. Can't you imagine a situation in which you've notated a score (with a deadline looming) and then, at the last minute, the composer or director decides that a number of measures has to be inserted at a certain point. Sure, in an ideal world one always does final formatting as the last step, but how many of us live in such an ideal world?

Seeing as my music is rarely performed, that's not an issue. sad So, I guess it's ideal to be unrecognized. I can spend years tinkering with a score if I want to and no one will complain.
