I could see using SmartMusic on ipad as a useful tool for students and teachers due to its portability. I already use my ipod touch for practicing with lots of other music applications that record and assess my intonation such as Pitch Primer. Would also make it more affordable for the school to purchase more licenses of SmartMusic if we could use ipads instead of needing a laptop or desktop computer.

Not more affordable. The iPad costs more than many desktops or notebooks.

Besides, MM has said repeatedly that they have no plans to move anything to the iPad.

Another problem is schools and wireless accessablilty.  Too many chances of network problems due to wireless use.  I suspect that most users are school students and parents and most cannot afford an Ipad also. I know I can't.

Actually, if other school districts are like our school district, the 16GB iPad is about 1/2 the cost of a school notebook computer. District IT departments, as a whole, do not buy the "low cost" notebook available at Wal-Mart for $398. They buy a higher-end notebook with an extended service warranty, often bringing the expense to $1200-$1500. The plan is for those computers to be in service about five years. I'm not sure what the functional life of an iPad is expected to be, as I'm one of those guys who upgrades annually. But I would imagine an iPad is serviceable for 3-4 years.

Additionally, with iPads, there is nothing to fix. Little to no heat, no moving internal parts. Sure, it can be dropped, or the glass broken (Has to be almost intentional breaking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4vvQq7BpiE). But so can any notebook. So many of the extended SERVICE warranties are null and void with an iPad.

As for other cost, many students at the secondary level come with a scientific calculator ($100), iPod Touch ($250), and Smart Phone. Some even have their own computers. I think the healthy model is for schools to provide required resources (apps & eBooks) and for families to provide hardware.

Wi-fi networks are no big deal anymore. They can be dropped into a school in a matter of days, and they're pretty resilient. Even if a school isn't going iPad, many schools are going wi-fi, just so students can access the Internet on their own devices (many which are faster than the school can provide). A good hardware firewall on the front end will ensure that kids--in general--don't go where they shouldn't go.

Back to the topic at hand: Schools are starting to go with 1-to-1 iPad initiatives. They make too much sense with their ten hour battery, choice of apps, eBooks, and connectivity. Here in Minnesota, GFW went this year, three others (at least) are going next year.

I've contacted MakeMusic about this at multiple levels...kids are GOING to have iPads. Do you want that $30 (or less) SmartMusic subscription per music student or not? Seems like a no-brainer to me, even if development for an iOS app costs a lot of money. It WILL pay itself back.

Yes - an iPad app would be killer. An iPad with SmartMusic on it sitting on a music stand would be simply perfect.

Choirguy you're right. I'm a technology director in a school district where the band director uses SmartMusic. My son - a 6th grader plays Alto Sax and I purchased SmartMusic for him. We run it on our Mac currently but we do own an iPad and that would be the BEST platform for this product. At $36 it would still be a bargain. Most folks don't want to spend more than a couple of buck for an app but SM is different - it's an app plus a subscription and an awesome bargain - the music that you get is unbelievable. And with the added capability of the iPad 2 and Garage Band now available for all iPads it's simply a no brainer for MM to make it happen!

If MM make an app, it will be a real downgrade!

With regard to Smartmusic on iPad. I would assume that some of the functionality of SM may be broken up into smaller apps:
1) SM Playback/Record - The ability to login, get assignments or SM files and record with them and then submit them. Music on screen would be secondary but probably only doable on an iPad. Assessment would also be tertiary in my mind. Should computing power be a non issue, intelligent accompaniment could also be included.
2) A separate gradebook app for teachers with the all of the functionality of the online gradebook. Perhaps recoding in HTML 5 instead of flash may be a simple solution.
3) Some features could be left out for space: Tuner/metronome(plenty of apps do that already), preinstalled excercises or method books(install as needed), and the ability to keep multiple takes.

It could actually be very useful in a school setting and a fairly simple and easy to manage solution.

If cost is the main reason behind this, consider the fact that you can run smart music without issue on 6-7 year old desktop\laptops PCs is huge. It is not too hard to find donations from colleges, companies getting rid of old technology. Smart music has been good at keeping hardware requirements low.

I personally would rather have them release a Linux version, which could then be used on older desktops\laptops without issue, and also be ported to google android phones, tablets, etc since android is based on the 2.6 linux core.

Just a note: I hope everyone is aware that MakeMusic released a "grading" app (iOS and Android) for SmartMusic. You can download it free in the app stores.

I'm just hoping this is a sign that an iPad app is in development.

Android's a little more tricky, as the various sizes and shapes (5 inch to 12 inch, 4:3 to widescreen) of Android tablets is making it tricky for developers to make tablet apps that look good and work on all the tablets. It's nothing against Google/Android, just a fact. It's wjhy there isn't a devoted PDF music reader on the market for Android tablets. It's been rumored that the next version of the Android OS, Ice Cream, will bring some sort of continuity to all Android devices. Here's hoping for that: competition is a good thing for everyone. That all said, the iPad environment is easier to develop for, with some 25 million tablets sold, all 9.7 inch.

Smart Music for my Ipad, I can't think of anything better.  How easy would it be to just plug speakers into the Ipad and go.  If this every happened, I would be so extreamly happy!!!!

Forget about (directly) plugging in speakers, knkbrand. Either stream the audio wirelessly to a stereo system or TV via AirPlay (AppleTV) or Bluetooth (Monoprice's Bluetooth Audio Receiver is $20). Wires? We don't need wires!

Our school recently purchased a set of 100 ipads for various student situations. WHAT a fantastic personal learning device. Intuitive, personal, full-functioning, easy-on, easy-off. Our student body is FULLY engaged w/ these devices in ALL courses.

THE future, people...MM should move quickly w/ development!!

Brad - interesting that you are so positive about the iPad - my experience has been good, too, on the whole. However, it's display of PDF files SUCK big time. Especially if said PDF happens to be large or or high quality. I agree about music apps needing development - at least Notepad on the iPad could be useful for jotting down ideas really quickly.

diz...

Have you tried forScore (www.forscoreapp.com)? In my testing, it handles large PDFs the best, and preloads page turns. There are a few other options, but it's really the starting point at $4.99

As for music apps (in terms of notation)...right now Notion for the iPad has the "leg up." Anything you write in Notion can be exported as a MusicXML file and brought into Finale.

And a Finale Viewer is coming soon (it's been announced...check out the Finale blog for more info).

Ipads are becoming more affordable for sure...and while I'm a pc user...apple has the market on intuitive use.

This would ROCK on the ipad....
