In any Mac version of Finale, A long note won't sustain after a unison with other notes. The problem exists with both QuickTime and Finale's internal instruments (external MIDI instruments seem to work properly)

Explanation of problem: Let's pretend I have two voices, with the same internal instrument. Both of them start on middle C. One of them sustains for a whole note. But the other moves up to D on the second half note. I lose the C, not hearing the dissonance that should result. Only the D plays.

Possible technical reason: Clearly the "note off" message is being received on behalf of BOTH notes, as if the Finale can't play back the same note twice at a time in the same instrument (patch) while using internal instruments.

Windows workaround: Incidentally, according to other posts, this is also a Windows problem that has apparently been solved by changing some check box in the MIDI set up dialog or by changing some OutMatch1 setting in one of finale's midi "ini" type files.

Mac workaround: This is such a nuisance, and I am convinced there is a workaround. WHAT IS IT?

I have been plagued by this issue for years now. I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!

The behavior in Windows is the same. The only solution is to assign a different channel to the second voice.

P.S.: Actually, there is a workaround. Ctl-click (Windows method--not sure of Mac) the measure in Speedy Tool and deselect Playback for the half note C in your example. In effect, you will be hearing only the whole note play, so the note off message will be eliminated. Works well.

Zuill,

I have found that deselecting "Match On/Off" in MIDI setup does the trick

Option-click from the Speedy Tool on the Mac.

That is not the case for me. I tried that before I posted, but got the same result. That's when I looked for the workaround. Would you post the sample file that you used to test this?

hmmm... Human Playback is supposed to do that since Fin2004. I just checked and it appears that it only works on braced (piano-like) staves. I will extend the process to any kind of staff.

Zuill,

File as requested. I created using the setup wizard with no other adjustments.

With Match On/Off checked, the trumpet 1 note dies after the first beat, with Match On/Off unchecked it sustains for the whole measure.

Strange,

I can no longer download .mus files from this forum - I normally right click (Windows) and save-as but this option is now greyed out.

Anyone any ideas?

The whole note cuts off either way. Having that checked or unchecked gives the same result. When I apply my fix, however, the problem is solved.

Perhaps it's a hardware connected issue?

What soundcard/midi device do you use?

I'm using the Finale Soundfont. My soundcard is Audigy.

I'm using the same (Finale soundfont loaded in Audigy).

On further investigation, I find that using the Softsynth as MIDI out, the whole note sustains irrespective of the Match On/Off setting.
