One of my students sent me this image. I've only seen one of these in person.

Never used that, but I did use rub on transfer music symbols made by Letraset in the late 70's. I remember one job I did for Mickey D's. There was a song that Ronald sang for the Happy Meals, I transcribed what he sang and created a single page using these transfer symbols which eventually got printed on the paper placemats that they put on the trays. That single page of easy music took a full day to create. Not fun at all.

Jetcopy,

Yikes! I had (thankfully) forgotten those Letraset sheets. I probably have some still in some drawer somewhere, with all the good notes scratched off.

Ah notaset, and hand-drawn staves. I set the score of Birtwistle's Secret Theatre using this method back in the late 1980's

As I recall, his music is pretty gnarly, too.

There's a different Henle video that I downloaded from here, featuring the same engraver.

I owned (and used!) a music typewriter in the early 80s for about a month. It was horrible. I sold it at a considerable loss.

I only recently saw the video that Jari linked to. I've seen the other Henle film which has a bit of engraving, amongst other stuff. But this is fascinating and extraordinary. It really does show that music engraving is as much craft as science.

It's also proof that whatever Finale may be capable of, there will always be a need for manual adjustment.

At least, back in those days the composer didn't have to do the typesetting himself of score and parts. Publishers did work for their cut of the royalties.

AFAIK most publisher still do the typesetting if the composer doesn't want to do it him/herself. But you don't get paid for the typesetting if you don't do it yourself. That's one of the reasons most composers choose to do it themselves.

The composers at my publisher have different workflows. Some write the score by hand and let the publisher typeset both the score and parts. Most do the score in Finale or Sib and the parts as well. Some do only in the score in Fin/Sib and let someone else typeset the parts.

I have actually done all my typesetting (score and parts) up to now. But my publisher thought I should let someone else do it and focus on composing.

Can they be relied upon to match house styles, work to page counts, and meet certain standards? Or do the files need to be heavily edited afterwards?

That's a rather sensitive issue I'm afraid...

The truth is that some can be relied upon but some not... (Don't tell anyone I said that!)

Let's just be thankful that most authors don't typeset their own books.

Chris,

I got mine from JW Pepper, although this page may mean they are out of them. Worth a phone call, though.

Also, this is on the Henle website:

You can purchase original engraving frames – mounted on wood (HN 8011) or unmounted (HN 8010) - from your local dealer.
If you need any help, please contact us: sales@henle.com.

I got my plate a few years back from sheetmusicplus. (It was a plate from a Chopin mazurka, opus 30 no 4). It seems to still be available from there, I'm actually thinking of getting a few more plates.

Mine is a Mendelssohn, Song Without Words, opus 102 no. 3.

When I look at it, I'm reminded that whatever Fred Astaire did, Ginger Rogers did backwards, and in high heels!

I suspect that it's all done like we do it, now. So they're taking up space that could be turned into money.

You get a random plate, that's part of the deal. The craftmanship is there independently of the piece IMO.
