Coda, to hide time signature, it says in the manual, on page 10 of chapter 12 Hiding time signatures " It's standard practice....etc..etc... and it does NOT say how to hide the Time Sig. In the next sentence it says "To hide all time signatures" see STAFF Attributes Dialog box. I can't see actually where it says how to hide the thing. Among other things it says: Hide Staff, and something about independent elements? Independent for doing what? What is the point for having a nice big heading for HIDING TIME SIGNATURES and then it does not say in the following sentence how to do it? I've spent an hour looking for it and finally in frustration I decided to bother my colleagues at the forum for help.
Can you clarify this for me? I have an incomplete measure at the end of a piece, a three/four measure with only one quarter note in it. I am trying to hide the one/quarter time signature which I am using for that measure. Any help would greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Ted Lebar.

Sorry everyone, I finally stumbled onto the answer quite accidentally. On page 11 0f chapter 12 it does say how to hide the time sig. I do however have a question about how it is explained. It says "double click the barline handle of the measure...etc.....I was clicking the left barline and of course, nothing happened. Then by accident I clicked the right barline and, BINGO! I mean every measure does have two barlines, left and right, correct? Am I missing something? It would have been so simple to just say "click the right barline". I cannot believe that I am the only one who was mislead by this terminology. Can you correct this, CODA? Sorry if I am in a negative mood, but I spent one and a half hours on this hiding
business.
Cheers, Ted Lebar.

Ted:

Questions are never a bother on the Forum; this is how people learn things that the manual might not make clear...

To do what you want to do, simply select the Measure Tool and double-click that "incomplete" measure. In very middle of the DB that pops up, next to Time Signature, click the pull-down menu and select Always Hide.

To see what the manual was referring to regarding the Staff Tool, select that tool and double-click the staff. On the right side of the DB that pops up is a section entitled Items to Display. The very last choice is Time Signatures. If you uncheck that item, the staff won't show the time signatures at all. (You might use this feature if you were engraving ancient music, for example.)

The Measure Tool allows you to do this in any measure you choose, instead of on the entire staff.

Cheers.

Gary

(An addendum.)

Yes, the right barline is the one that you click to get to the Measure Attributes DB and/or the beat chart; otherwise, how could you adjust the first measure?

But you'll also get the Measure Attributes DB (though not the beat chart) by double-clicking the measure, which is a lot easier than trying to aim for that little handle, especially if you have bad eyes like I do...

Gary, thank you very much, for taking the time and getting back to me so fast. This was the fastest reply I've received so far. It turned out be an educational evening for my ability to use Finale. I guess in a way I am still hoping of finding an exact expressions( or better yet, a precise expressions) when I read instructions. This goes back (I think) to my native Slovenian language which still retains some very ancient "Indo-European" forms. It contains 6 cases of singular, dual and plural, in verbs as well as in adjectives. Very hard to study the grammar but once mastered, it allows for a very exact expression and I think I am still thinking in those terms. Thanks again.
Ted Lebar.
