Hi Robert et al,

Allen suggested I post this here.

I recently started experimenting with FinaleScript for the first time (in Fin2005b), and very quickly ran up against a significant limitation in FinMac FinaleScript batch processing.

First, in order to make changes to a batch of files, they must be updated to the version of Finale that's invoking the FinaleScript -- in my case, Fin2005. Fair enough, there's even a built-in FinaleScript that converts batches of old documents. So far, so good.

Big problem, though -- when batch converting old documents, FinaleScript chokes whenever the resulting filename will be longer than 32 characters. (Ack! The ghost of OS 9 lives!) If this happens, FinaleScript requires you to name the document manually. If you are, for instance, trying to convert a folder containing thousands of old Finale documents, you will quickly become frustrated with this limitation.

Since the default "Convert Folder of Files to the current Finale Format" appends "_2k5" to all files, it's very easy to inadvertently create files where the resultant filename will be longer than 32 characters (even when you're converting files created in OS 9).

This is even more of a problem when the old file contains "nonstandard" characters -- for instance, an em dash. FinaleScript interprets the em dash as two characters -- "Å\" -- making it even more likely that you'll run up against the 32-character limit.

This is a very frustrating bug, which was very difficult to diagnose at first. I really hope the 32-character filename limit can be fixed, because it's an incredible PITA.

It would also be nice if you could tell FinaleScript to automatically overwrite the old files when converting (instead of having to rename them). It would also be nice if you could specify a target folder for the updated files created the "Convert Folder of Files" FinaleScript.
