Too bad for what I perceive as a mistake. My forum days may be coming to a close.

I don't think I'll participate there either. There is the possibility of us all going to a non-MM forum. Isn't there already such? But of course the poor user who needs help probably won't find it.

I've been fairly active on the FaceBook "Finale Powerusers" group. I guess that's where I'll be hiding now.

You can post images and links on FB, but not other files. In any case, when I mentioned the database I was talking about this forum, not FB.

Guess this means I will finally have to concede defeat and join F-book, something I have carefully avoided doing for many years, now.

This whole thing is sad, and smacks of ageism. My bet is that the average age for those of us here (I'm 62) is somewhat higher than the average age at Finale. I've learned to my everlasting annoyance that there is scant regard for history anymore, and (with due regard for the exceptions out there) it seems to be a "Me Generation" thing. People whose current age is no more than 50 seem not to care a whit about the past and worry instead that only the latest and greatest is truly important.

Trouble is, this isn't new. 25 years back, a Crown Corp headed by a bunch of hired young MBA's instead of career public servants was handed a government operation that was more than a century old. Within a year, all but the legal minimum of historic records and archives had been shredded, including valuable wartime vintage microfilm records and historic information. The stated reason was "space", but when you dug into things, it really turned out to be a mandate to look forward, not backward, whichsame came directly from the guy who was in charge. He was 46, and left the corporation about 18 months later. Too late, all that valuable record was gone. And because there was really only one copy of each, there was no backup to pull info from if needed. As a result, some claims died, some ended up in court, and even some laws had to be re-written. All because of "look forward, not backward".

Then there is the whole Facebook/ownership/copyright thing, which I don't believe has been solved yet. Has it?

Ron, your comment about the database snuck in right before mine--I didn't see it. I was wondering about your Facebook finalepower experience--how well do things go without having attachments?

one can join Facebook with a minimum of trouble. One need only set all of the privacy settings to maximum.
if you have no friends or family to keep up with on FB, then just put everything as private, only you will see it and those in any groups you post to. They won't be able to repost your things.

that said, a Facebook page for Finale users is sort of pointless since, as others have noted, you can't attach files.

As for the new MakeMusic forum, I posted a question there a few months ago. It took a week to get any sort of response, and that was from a MM employee. And the employee's suggestions for remedying the situation about which I was asking was totally wrong. It's as if they hire people who don't know how to use Finale.
Zuill would probably have found it in 2 seconds flat. As it turns out, I figured out the issue on my own within a day or so.

I really hate the new forum, its look, and how it works. I won't be migrating there. I will have to find some other resource for Finale information.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) using 2012 (2014 has been shelved for its lack of support for older Garritan libraries), putting Finale 25 through its paces.
Windows 8.1
basically ALL Garritan libraries, plus XSample Chamber Ensemble.

I like the Facebook Finale Powerusers group. It's not impossible to attach Finale files,
but you have to do it via an external link (for example with dropbox.com).
I have attached Finale documents several times without a problem.
But aren't most of all requests (90% ?) solvable with a screenshot anyway ? That can be attached quickly in Facebook.
Sometimes I also attach a screencam video which visualizes the problem. In the standard forums you can only attach external links for videos, on Facebook it's integrated.
The Facebook group also answers very fast and exact and it has a search function though it is very simple.

For more general engraving questions there is a second Facebook group called "Music Engraving Tips" which also has many Sibelius or LilyPond users on board.
It answers incredibly fast and good too.

Compared to Finaleforum.com the two Facebook groups are extremely active with each about 10-15 new threads per day plus many answers.
And that with far less users: Finaleforum.com has 8250 members, the Finale Powerusers group only 1500. Music Engraving Tips has about 6200 users.

Of course, I would prefer a professional forum software, but if this is not available at MM I would recommend to switch to Facebook.
I also like on Facebook that you usually see a profile photo for each member, so it feels more personal to me.

The FB group is not great--it has many drawbacks, but it seems to be the best alternative at present.

One of MakeMusic's strongest assets has been this forum. With it, people frustrated with a complex and, at times arcane, product can get help, often within a few minutes, from people who love Finale and know its ins and outs, sometimes better than MM's support staff do. Without this forum, MM will be just another company with a complicated toy on the market that many people will give up on after running into walls and having no almost-instant help to navigate. I know I would not have persisted some 15 years ago if it weren't for some of the amazingly generous folks here.

Have they not learned from their experience of the last several months of having the new forum available that the older experienced users here are not going to migrate and that people have posted questions there that have been ignored for days? If they move forward they will be replacing a treasure trove with junk.

Seems like a good Forum site to me, so far not very active, but if everybody from the old, soon to be dead, forum started using it that would change. I've had no problems signing in, only limitation is that attachments have to be zipped with a maximum size of 100kb. It's quite well organized in terms of categories and it appears to be run by two very competent moderators, who've both been very helpful and knowledgeable on the Forum here (Peter Thomsen and what seems to be Mike Rosen).
Facebook isn't an acceptable solution for many, I think (and certainly not for me).

Why MM chose Zendek is beyond me. The Steinberg/Dorico BBS software is similar to this in terms of Table of Contents info and the ability to attach files. Steinberg doesn't seem to have any difficulties with it. One would think this database of Finale info could have been migrated to the BBS software used by Steinberg with little difficulty.

Exactly. The Steinberg Forum is very good and, as it was pointed out somewhere in this or some other thread, there are ways to simply migrate the whole old Forum to a new site. This Zendek site is laughable, totally useless and, as on can see, basically ignored.

Evidence that management has no idea how their product is actually used.

woodwind specialist and doubler - Finale 2014d using Speedy Entry - no capslock, GPO 4 Full, Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3, Garritan Concert and Marching Band 2, Windows 10, 12GB RAM, frequently RTFM.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read
